Things to do in Stellenbosch
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Stellenbosch
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Summer peak: hot and dry, harvest builds, picnics and long evenings, highest prices and wildfire risk.
Autumn and locals favourite: harvest energy, golden vines and easing crowds. Mid March to mid April is best.
Winter low: cool and wet, waterfalls at full force, fireplaces and value wine programmes.
Spring: fynbos flowering and festival dense October, warming to summer without December prices.

Where to stay in Stellenbosch
Historic Town Centre
first trip, all-round base
Walk to dinner, bars and the Village Museum, and drive out to estates by day.
Banhoek Valley & Helshoogte
couples, views and fine dining
Dramatic and romantic valley east of town, expensive and car dependent after dark.
Northern Wine Estates
wine lovers who want quiet
Close to town but rural in feel, from Jonkershoek toward Simonsberg estate country.
Southern Wine Estates
families
Bigger estates with activities, parking and family infrastructure, 15 minutes from town dinner.
Devon Valley & Bottelary Hills
golf, MTB and longer stays
Spread out and quiet with no nightlife, good for golf and riding bases.
Think twice about
- Kayamandi, Cloetesville and informal settlement edges
Do not book visitor accommodation here or wander solo. Visit only on a booked resident led Township and Village tour.
- Ida's Valley and Tennantville residential streets
Not a first timer base: quiet residential streets after dark, little saving once Ubers to the centre are counted.
- Train station, Adam Tas Road underpass and Die Braak late at night
Station surrounds empty out and are poorly lit after dark. Walk busy Church, Dorp and Ryneveld instead, or Uber.
- Isolated farm roads without a named estate or lodge
Avoid anonymous ultra cheap farm listings with no estate name or reviews: unlit roads and unverifiable security.

Is Stellenbosch safe?
- Biggest tourist crime is ATM scamming: use ATMs inside banks or malls in daylight and cover your PIN.
- Busy centre streets are fine in company with awareness. Do not walk quiet, poorly lit streets or farm roads at night.
- Driving risks exceed crime risks: drink drivers, rural road users and strong wind on Helshoogte and the N1.
- Emergency 112 from a mobile, police 10111. Carry insurance covering private care such as Mediclinic Stellenbosch.
Stellenbosch travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Trying to do five or six estates in a day: two or three at most, with a long lunch.
- Babylonstoren as just a wine tasting misses its value, and the R100 garden entry surprises visitors.
- Delaire Graff terrace walk ins can face brusque service: booked restaurant guests fare better.
- There is no Stellenbosch Wine Tram: the Wine Tram is in Franschhoek. Give Franschhoek its own day.
Getting around Stellenbosch: public transport and more
- Town centre is walkable, estates are spread across three valleys: you need a car or a driver strategy.
- Do not drink and drive. Self drive mornings, then use Vine Hopper, Wine Tractor, Uber, Bolt or a booked driver.
- Cape Town is 45 minutes off peak and 90 plus at rush hour. The train exists but is not a first visit default.
- Use hotel or secure parking. Tip uniformed municipal car guards R5 to R10 and never leave valuables visible.
