Winter is a feature, with playable golf, good hiking, quiet Zion and value. February is among the best months.
Summer is hottest with monsoon storms. Use a dawn schedule, pools at midday and Tuacahn after dark. July and August are worst.

Small historic town with easy Snow Canyon and Tuacahn access, mostly vacation rentals and thin dining.

Hurricane / La Verkin / Sand Hollow corridor
Zion heavy and lake days, budget chains

Washington City
families, value
Newer chain hotels, family restaurants and vacation rentals including Desert Color, good for groups but not walkable.
Think twice about
- Older east St. George Blvd and I-15 motel strips
Not dangerous, but some properties are tired with thin walls, parking lot noise and patchy maintenance. Vet recent reviews.
- Roadside properties on SR-9 between La Verkin and Springdale marketed as near Zion
Isolated stays can mean no dinner within walking distance and Springdale prices without Springdale walkability.
- Far west and far south vacation rentals for a Zion focused trip
A cheap rate that adds 40 minutes each way to every Zion morning costs sleep and early parking.

Is St. George safe?
- Heat is the top risk. Hike at dawn, take shade from noon to 5pm, drink before thirst and use electrolytes.
- Check the flash flood forecast for any canyon day and never enter a slot when storms are in the drainage.
- Watch for rattlesnakes, scorpions and sharp lava, never touch a desert tortoise, and never climb wet sandstone.
- Utah alcohol rules are stricter than Nevada, with state liquor stores closed Sundays and metered pours.
- Some local businesses close or shorten hours on Sundays. Lock cars and hide valuables at trailheads.
St. George travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Fiesta Fun, malls and chain strips are generic anywhere America, for a supply run not an itinerary.
- Zion as a casual midday summer add on means parking circles and hiking at noon in extreme heat.
- Sand Hollow has swimmer's itch and powerboat noise. Quail Creek or a hotel pool is calmer for a quiet swim.
- Ghost towns like Grafton and Silver Reef are 30 to 45 minutes for most visitors. Pair them with another day.
Getting around St. George: public transport and more
- You need a car. SunTran buses will not get you to Snow Canyon, Tuacahn, Sand Hollow or Zion on a visitor schedule.
- Las Vegas airport is about 1 hour 50 minutes by I-15 with far more flights than St. George Regional.
- Downtown to Snow Canyon is 15 to 20 minutes, to Zion and Springdale 50 to 60 minutes, to Cedar City 55 minutes.
- Parking is easy downtown but Zion and Springdale fill before 8am in season. Charge EVs overnight.
