Los Angeles travel guide
Where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Things to do in Los Angeles, planned over three days
Best time to visit Los Angeles
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
May Gray / June Gloom: coastal marine layer keeps beaches gray and cool until mid-afternoon while inland valleys bake, skip June if beach days are the point
Locals' favorite: warmest ocean water of year, clear skies, thinner crowds, caveat is peak wildfire season with possible smoke haze
Cool, occasionally rainy season still mild by other cities' standards, best hiking weather of year
Warm and dry from spring to autumn, with highs from the 60s to the 80s°F; family attractions are busiest and priciest from mid June through August.
January to March is awards season: hotels and big-name tables tighten around the Oscars, and the LA Marathon closes roads in March.

Mixed itineraries

Venice
Second trips and beach stays
Abbot Kinney is lovely, boardwalk area scruffier than postcards, great for beach-specific stays
Think twice about
- Downtown LA as a sleep base
Skid Row homelessness severe and unavoidable on foot, shapes any stay, especially at night; day-trip only for museums and markets
- Hollywood Boulevard
Gritty, touristy and loud at night: see it by day and sleep elsewhere.
- LAX corridor
Functional chains for late arrival or early flight only, not fun
- Areas 20 minutes from everything on map
LA traffic means 60 to 90 minutes at 5pm, not 20 minutes

Is Los Angeles safe?
- Treat Downtown as a daytime area for museums, markets and food, not a place to sleep: the streets around Skid Row are hard going at night.
- Trails have no water on the way: carry more than you think, and treat 100°F Valley days as no-hike days.
Los Angeles travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Santa Monica Pier is for a walk and a photo; the food is carnival-grade, and the South Bay beaches are better for a beach day.
- The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a 20 minute stop, not an afternoon. Skip it unless you are nearby for something else.
- Rodeo Drive: 15-minute window-shop, poor dinner venue
- Read every restaurant bill before tipping: many places add a service charge, so ask whether it goes to staff as the tip.
- Price hotel parking before you book: $50 to $75 a night is common and can turn a mid-range hotel into an expensive one.
- Stay off the 405 and the 10 between 4 and 7pm on weekdays.
Getting around Los Angeles: public transport and more
- Rent a car unless you are staying in one neighbourhood, and budget for ride-shares on nights out.
- Cluster each day in one area, cross town once maximum
- Metro useful only on E Line (Santa Monica to Downtown) and B Line (Downtown to Hollywood/Universal)
- Never leave anything visible in a parked car: rentals are smash-and-grab targets everywhere, including trailheads and beach lots.
- From LAX, taxis and ride-shares pick up at the LAX-it lot by free shuttle, the FlyAway bus runs to Union Station, and Metro trains leave from the LAX/Metro Transit Center.
