Things to do in Atlanta, planned over three days
Best time to visit Atlanta
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring is the best sights season, with festivals and gardens, but tree pollen can wreck an allergy sufferer's trip.
Heat season, high 80s to low 90s with humidity and afternoon storms; sightsee mornings and eat late.
Fall is the locals' favourite window; October brings the best weather, Pride and North Georgia colour.
Winter is mild, quiet and underrated, with Garden Lights and the cheapest good hotel rates in January and February.

Old Fourth Ward / Inman Park
local flavour and BeltLine trips
Ponce City Market and Krog Street Market at either end, Victorian streets and top neighbourhood dining.
Buckhead
luxury, quiet and safety-first travellers
The grand hotels and splurge restaurants in the safest visitor area, but car oriented and far from Midtown.
Downtown
conventions, games and the Aquarium cluster
The Aquarium, civil rights centre and stadiums on foot and MARTA at its best, but quiet outside event hours.
Decatur
small-town base, families and food trips
A walkable courthouse square of independent restaurants on the east MARTA line, low key and safe feeling at night.
West Midtown / Westside
design-and-food repeat visitors
Converted industrial lofts, breweries and galleries around Westside Provisions, with thin hotel stock.
Think twice about
- South Downtown and the Underground Atlanta area
The emptiest, roughest feeling blocks after dark, with vacant storefronts and concentrated street homelessness. No discount here is worth it.
- Vine City and the Bankhead corridor
Few hotels, little open at night and long walks between anything. Go in daytime for Busy Bee and the history, but base yourself elsewhere.
- Downtown off the Centennial Park and Peachtree corridor
Streets empty sharply once offices and events close, with visible panhandling around Woodruff Park and Five Points.
- Airport and I-75/I-285 motel strips
Highway rows with nothing walkable and a traffic heavy drive or MARTA ride between you and every sight.

Is Atlanta safe?
- Never leave anything visible in a parked car anywhere in Atlanta; break ins are the top visitor crime.
- Downtown after dark away from events is empty; use rideshare door to door and keep to lit Peachtree and park blocks.
- At night, use rideshare rather than walking in south downtown and around the stadium edges of Vine City.
- Summer heat, humidity and lightning injure more visitors than crime; get off the river and summits when thunder approaches.
- Check your government's current travel advice before you go.
Atlanta travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- World of Coca-Cola as a headline attraction; do the Civil Rights Center next door first.
- Underground Atlanta, a long cycle of revival announcements and disappointment.
- The Varsity as a food destination; go once for the 1928 drive in theatre of it, not for lunch.
- SkyView Atlanta, a generic wheel at attraction prices.
- Eating in the Centennial Park attraction orbit, Atlanta's worst food value; take MARTA two stops to Midtown or walk to Castleberry Hill instead.
Getting around Atlanta: public transport and more
- MARTA rail is excellent for the airport and the Midtown, Downtown, Buckhead and Decatur spine.
- Traffic is the defining hazard; rush hour runs roughly 6:30 to 10am and 3 to 7:30pm.
- You need wheels for Buford Highway, Stone Mountain, the Chattahoochee trailheads, Amicalola and most golf.
- Walking works within Midtown, Old Fourth Ward, Inman Park, Decatur Square and Buckhead Village, not between districts.
