Spring mud season trough, cheapest lodging, many restaurants shut and trails muddy.
Summer co-peak, warm days, wildflowers, festival and market, with afternoon thunderstorms in July and August.
Fall colour and best value, gold aspens in late September and lodging drops sharply.
Late fall mud season, summer operations closed and ski season not yet real.

Think twice about
- Highway 82 / Airport Business Center strip
Safe and sometimes cheaper, but you drive or bus for every meal, view and stroll, so it disappoints as Aspen.
- Snowmass Village for a nightlife trip
The 9 mile winter road and last buses make it a poor bachelor, bachelorette or restaurant tour base.
- Downvalley in peak winter without checking transport
Highway 82 is the only road in, and snow or traffic can stretch the commute well past an hour.
- Woody Creek / Old Snowmass / Redstone rentals without a car
Beautiful remote rentals sold as Aspen, 15 to 40 minutes out with nothing walkable and no town bus.

Is Aspen safe?
- Aspen is a low crime resort town. Watch trailhead car break ins and lock skis at base racks.
- Altitude starts at 8,000 feet. Hydrate, take day one easy, go light on alcohol and descend if symptoms worsen.
- Be off exposed ground before afternoon lightning in July and August, and give moose 25 plus yards.
- Check your government's current travel advice before you go.
Aspen travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Walk up lift tickets and base area rental lines are the biggest money trap. Buy ahead and use delivered rentals.
- Maroon Bells at midday without a reservation means being turned around at the road gate.
- Cloud Nine is a party with lunch attached at party prices, not a quiet mountain meal.
- Mud season trips in late April to May and late October to November find a half shut town.
Getting around Aspen: public transport and more
- You do not need a car in Aspen. RFTA buses in town and to Snowmass are free and frequent, Rubey Park is the hub.
- Aspen airport is 3 miles from downtown and most hotels shuttle it. Denver is about 4 hours away.
- Downtown is flat and compact. The free Downtowner covers in town rides and WE-Cycle gives free 30 minute rides.
