Things to do in Springdale
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Springdale
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring: waterfalls run, Emerald Pools earns its name, wildflowers; Narrows may close for snowmelt in April to May.
Summer: long days and tubing, but 90 to 100F plus heat, biggest crowds and July to September monsoon flash-flood risk.
Fall: best window overall, especially mid-September to mid-October for the Narrows; golden cottonwoods late October to November.
Winter: 30 to 50F days, empty trails, you can drive the Scenic Drive, cheapest lodging; icy shade and reduced hours.
What's on
- Zion Canyon Music Festival Usually a weekend in late September
Town signature event at the Bit & Spur backyard: two stages of roots, bluegrass, funk and rock; book lodging early.
Best things to do in Springdale
The Narrows
Zion's defining hike, walking in the Virgin River between narrow walls up to Wall Street and Big Spring.
Angels Landing
Zion's signature chained summit hike, reached via Walter's Wiggles and Scout Lookout for the canyon view.
Scout Lookout
The no-permit Angels Landing alternative: most of the big view with none of the chained-ridge exposure.
Canyon Overlook Trail
Best view per mile in Zion: a one-mile round trip to a railed overlook above Pine Creek Canyon.
Checkerboard Mesa
Cross-hatched sandstone viewpoint on the east side, easily combined with Canyon Overlook and the tunnel drive.
Emerald Pools
Classic family loop to pools, alcoves and seasonal falls, best after rain or during spring snowmelt.
Kayenta Trail
Elevated, quieter link from Emerald Pools toward The Grotto, with fine canyon views and fewer crowds.
The Watchman Trail
Best hike starting on foot from Springdale, climbing to a bench below The Watchman without the shuttle.
Where to stay in Springdale
South Zion Park Boulevard, walk-to-the-entrance Springdale
first trip, all-round base
Walk into the park and to most restaurants, and never fight for Visitor Center parking.
Mid- and north Springdale, on the town shuttle line
slightly calmer, slightly cheaper base
A free town-shuttle ride or short walk from the gate, with the same town at hand.
Inside the park
hikers trading thread count for location
Wake up past the shuttle queue under the cliffs, with Emerald Pools out the door.
East side: Mount Carmel, Orderville and East Zion
split stay, Observation Point and east-side riding
Quiet, dark and spacious, but every main-canyon day starts with the tunnel drive.
Virgin
glamping, stars and silence
Special places to sleep on Kolob Terrace Road that trade walkability for spectacle.
Hurricane / La Verkin
budget compromise with pre-dawn starts
Often half Springdale prices, but 25 to 35 minutes away every single morning.
Think twice about
- St. George as a Zion base
A pleasant city 55 to 60 minutes away: you lose sunrise and evenings in Springdale and add two hours of driving daily.
- Kanab as a Zion base
Excellent town on the wrong side: an hour or more to the south entrance via the east side and tunnel.
- Anywhere marketed as near Zion without a town name
Near Zion can mean 45 minutes away: insist on the actual town and drive time to the south entrance.

- Reserve Narrows boots, socks and stick online for pickup the afternoon before; peak sizes run out.
- Book top canyoneering operators before restaurants: prime dates sell out.

Is Springdale safe?
- Flash floods kill in Zion: check the flash-flood potential every morning and never enter the Narrows or a slot canyon under a watch or warning.
- Summer highs run 90 to 100F plus: carry about a litre of water per hour of hiking, electrolytes, hat and sunscreen.
- Respect heights at Angels Landing's chains and Canyon Overlook's exposed edges, and keep children in hand.
- Virgin River rocks are algae-slick: rented boots and a stick exist because ordinary shoes fail; heed cyanobacteria advisories.
- Watch for deer and bighorn sheep on Highway 9 at dawn and dusk, and use crossings in town rather than walking the shoulder.
Springdale travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Driving to the Visitor Center at 9 to 10am in season and being surprised by the parking and shuttle queues.
- Guided e-bike tours of the Scenic Drive: one road and no navigation, so rent self-guided instead.
- Guided Narrows hikes for confident hikers in normal flows: you pay for company, not access.
- In-park lodge dining as a foodie plan: sleep at Zion Lodge for dawn, eat in Springdale.
- The east-side tunnel as a shortcut: oversize vehicles need a $15 escort and one-way traffic causes delays.
- Midday summer hiking on shade-free rock at 100F or more is a medical risk, not an itinerary style.
Getting around Springdale: public transport and more
- Use the free Springdale town shuttle to the pedestrian entrance, then the Zion Canyon shuttle up the Scenic Drive.
- Visitor Center parking fills early; town paid lots run about $15 to $25 a day and erode the Hurricane saving.
- Walk the Boulevard core, but carry a light after dark and watch highway edges with no sidewalk or shade.
- Nearest airports: St. George about 50 minutes, Las Vegas about 2.5 to 3 hours, Salt Lake City about 4.5 hours.
- Utah is Mountain Time, an hour ahead of Las Vegas: kitchens mostly close by 9 to 9:30pm.
