Things to do in South Ari Atoll
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit South Ari Atoll
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Northeast monsoon dry season: calmest seas, best visibility, western manta cleaning stations most reliable roughly January to April, peak prices.
Southwest monsoon builds: more rain, rougher seas, plankton rich water, whale shark encounters building and manta activity shifting east.
Strongest whale shark reporting, August to November, with November a shoulder gamble as seas settle and crowds thin.
What's on
- International Whale Shark Day 30 August
Marked by operators and conservation groups working in SAMPA, inside peak whale shark season.
- Independence Day 26 July
A community event on local islands that guests may be welcomed into. Ask your guesthouse rather than assuming.
- Ramadan Expected around 7 February in 2027, shifts yearly
Local islands run quiet days, reduced cafe hours and festive iftar evenings, while resorts run largely as normal.
Best things to do in South Ari Atoll
South Ari Marine Protected Area
A 42 square kilometre protected area where whale sharks are present all year, strongest in August to November, never guaranteed.
Dhigurah Bikini Beach
The designated bikini beach on a 3 kilometre island, with a low tide walk out to the southern sandbank.
Dhangethi Bikini Beach
A good designated bikini beach a short walk from the village on the quieter diver's local island.
Fenfushi
The most remote inhabited island in Alifu Dhaalu, minutes from manta and whale shark water, worth several nights.
Dhidhdhoo
A small South Ari dive base close behind the whale shark search area, with very little else to do by design.
Maamigili
The atoll transport hub and airport island, a working town harbour walk and a practical, well connected base.
Where to stay in South Ari Atoll
Dhigurah
all round and value base
The longest local island beach in the atoll, a bikini beach and sandbank walk, the widest guesthouse and dive choice, and SAMPA boats daily.
Dhangethi
quiet diver base
Smaller and calmer than Dhigurah, dive led, with a good bikini beach and the same whale shark and manta access at local prices.
Maamigili
best connected base
The domestic airport island with the easiest transfers and practical guesthouses, but the weakest beach of the main local islands.
Fenfushi
remoteness over several nights
A far flung, slower inhabited island minutes from manta and whale shark water, with long transfers and thin services.
Rangali islands
luxury icon stay
Conrad's two bridged islands, one lively and one quieter, with Ithaa, a house reef and SAMPA excursions, about 30 minutes by seaplane.
Dhidhoofinolhu
large lively luxury resort
One of the longest resort islands, home to LUX* South Ari Atoll, with scale and food as the draw and snorkelling by boat, not house reef.
Think twice about
- Mahibadhoo as a holiday base
The atoll capital is a ferry and services transit hub with no bikini beach proposition to rival Dhigurah or Dhangethi. Pass through, do not base a beach week there.
- Fenfushi and Dhidhdhoo for a short stay
Long, weather exposed transfers and thin services punish a two night stay and leave no slack when a boat day is cancelled. They reward four plus nights.

Is South Ari Atoll safe?
- There have been fatal boat propeller accidents in SAMPA and propeller guard rules are not yet fully enforced. Stay close to your guide near boats.
- Terrorism risk is concentrated around the capital area; South Ari visitors only transit Male and Hulhumale.
- On local islands swimwear is only for the designated bikini beach, modest dress applies in villages, and alcohol and pork are prohibited.
- Channel currents are the everyday danger: snorkel with a buddy and fins, ask where the current runs today, and carry dive and evacuation insurance.
South Ari Atoll travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- A crowded, radio shared whale shark sighting can mean many boats and a scrum of swimmers. Choose smaller boats and shoulder weeks.
- The same whale shark is searched by local group boats and luxury resort boats alike. The resort price buys the boat, not a better animal.
- LUX* South Ari Atoll has effectively no walk in house reef. Book it for scale and food, knowing snorkelling is by boat.
- There is no alcohol on local islands and none can be brought in. Plan a dry local island stay or book resort nights for drinking.
Getting around South Ari Atoll: public transport and more
- Domestic flights from Male to Villa Airport on Maamigili take about 20 to 30 minutes, then a short boat reaches Dhigurah and the resorts.
- Seaplanes reach the Rangali area resorts in about 30 minutes, daylight only, with schedules confirmed a day or two ahead.
- Shared speedboats from Male take roughly 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours to Maamigili, Dhigurah and Dhangethi, booked through guesthouses.
- Public MTCC ferries via Mahibadhoo cost a few dollars a leg but run on limited days and are never usable for a flight connection.
- Resort islands cannot be visited casually: day access is only by the resort's own pass and boat, if offered at all.
