Things to do in Maldives
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Maldives
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Northeast monsoon dry season, best overall weather, calmest seas, with January to March best and February driest.
Shoulder months, transition weather, thinner crowds and mid prices, April suits divers and late November has upside.
Southwest monsoon begins, more rain and rougher seas, wildlife and surf build and resort discounts commonly reach 30 to 50 percent.
Wet season peak for Hanifaru feeding July to October, surf peak June to August and Vaadhoo bioluminescence June to October at new moons.
What's on

- Surf season in North Malé March-October
Southwest monsoon swells on the North Malé reef breaks, peaking June to August.

- Ithaa class venues hold 12 to 20 seats and need weeks ahead in season, Hanifaru slots are ranger limited.
- For seaplanes, arrive at Malé by about 15:00 and depart after about 09:00, or plan a Hulhumalé night at one end.
Is Maldives safe?
- Check your government's current travel advice before you go.
- Crime is very low on resorts and local islands, in Malé and Hulhumalé watch petty theft and avoid empty streets after dark and demonstrations.
- Outside resorts, swimwear is only for bikini beaches and resort islands, modest dress applies in villages, and alcohol and pork are prohibited.
- Channel currents are the main danger, snorkel with a buddy, ask where the current runs today and never touch coral, stonefish or shells.
- Dengue, equatorial sun and limited care beyond Malé are the health basics, dive and evacuation insurance are not optional extras.
Maldives travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The headline room rate can double once transfers, meal plans, green tax, service, GST, excursions and drinks are added. Price the week.
- An overwater villa for the whole stay is windier and weaker value than a beach villa, split beach then two or three overwater nights instead.
- Alcohol, pork and vapes are confiscated at customs and alcohol is unavailable on local islands and in Malé, drug penalties are severe.
- A free resort excursion shared with 40 people is rarely the memory the paid small group version is, read inclusions line by line.
Getting around Maldives: public transport and more
- Speedboats serve North and South Malé and nearby local islands, roughly 25 to 50 dollars return to Maafushi or Thulusdhoo.
- Seaplanes serve farther atolls in daylight only, roughly 290 to 700 dollars plus return, with schedules confirmed 24 to 48 hours ahead.
- Domestic flight plus speedboat reaches far atolls and Dhigurah, runs into the evening and is more weather robust than seaplanes.
- Public MTCC ferries cost 2 to 10 dollars a leg but are infrequent, slow and rarely run on Fridays, never use one for a flight connection.
- Resort transfers are arranged and charged by the resort and are effectively mandatory, local island boats can be booked directly.
