• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Northeast monsoon, the drier and calmer half of the year, with the reported manta peak at Maa Kandu and February to April the safest weather bet.

Where to stay in Addu Atoll
Gan
easiest arrival, divers and short stays
Five minutes from Gan International Airport, with Equator Village on the former RAF base, diving on the doorstep and almost no resident village life.
Causeway chain, Hithadhoo, Maradhoo and Feydhoo
local island value and a week of diving
Guesthouses, cafes, dive centres and the nature park, joined by the link road, under full local island rules including no alcohol.
Hulhumeedhoo
the old islands and quiet
Guesthouses on Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo near the old cemetery and mosques and Shark Point, reached by speedboat, not by the causeway.
Resort islands, Villingili, Herathera and Ismehela Hera
the classic resort week
Shangri-La for luxury, Canareef for mid-range scale with a bridge to Hulhudhoo, and South Palm with an explicit caution to verify first.
Think twice about
- Gan for village life
The population was moved off for the British base in the 1950s. Stay on Gan for diving and convenience, or on the causeway chain for people.
- Hulhumeedhoo for causeway dependent plans
It is not connected to the causeway. Every activity based in Hithadhoo or Gan starts with a speedboat leg of roughly 20 minutes.
- South Palm Resort without a fresh check
Recent guests describe closed facilities and a serious decline, though it still takes bookings. Confirm it is open before you pay.

What to book ahead
- British Loyalty: a few days ahead
- Maa Kandu: a few days ahead
- Shark Point: a few days ahead
- Kandu Huraa: a few days ahead
- Turtle Point: a few days ahead
- Shangri-La Villingili Resort & Spa: weeks ahead
- Canareef Resort Maldives: weeks ahead
- Equator Village: weeks ahead
- Put Maa Kandu and the British Loyalty in the first half of a dive trip so a weather lost day can be re-run.
- Check current international schedules to Gan before relying on them, frequencies are thin compared with Male.
- Confirm specific venues at Canareef and South Palm directly before building plans around them, both have had closures.
Is Addu Atoll safe?
- On local islands there is no alcohol, swimwear belongs only on designated tourist swimming areas, and shoulders and knees stay covered in villages.
- Terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out in the Maldives and could be indiscriminate: stay alert in tourist locations, transport hubs and markets.
- Channel currents and distance to advanced care are the main practical risks, Addu Equatorial Hospital helps but dive and evacuation insurance are essential.
- Drug penalties in the Maldives are severe, including for small quantities detected at airports.
Addu Atoll travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Booking Addu as a cheaper resort atoll misses the point, it is a living city, a base heritage layer and year round mantas.
- Any Addu listing or price from before 2026 may describe a closed or changed property, treat it as history, not information.
- Paying resort dive prices by default when the same sites are dived from Maradhoo at local island package prices.
Getting around Addu Atoll: public transport and more
- Buses, taxis and bicycles run the Gan to Hithadhoo link road, many stays include bikes, and the ride is the best way to understand the atoll.
- Hulhumeedhoo needs a speedboat of roughly 20 minutes from Hithadhoo, and Canareef, South Palm and Shangri-La run short boats from Gan.
- Maldivian domestic flights from Male to Gan take about 70 to 95 minutes and cross the equator, and Colombo to Gan services have operated.
