Things to do in Sharjah
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Sharjah
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Peak and best. Daytime 23 to 28C, all attractions open, Safari in season and wadis at their best.
Shoulder, still good. 28 to 35C and rising, sea at its best temperature and Safari open until about May.
Hot transition at 38 to 42C. Safari heads to closure, programmes wind down and hotel bargains begin.
Worst for a general visit. 40 to 48C with high humidity, Safari closed and outdoor sightseeing unsafe in the middle of the day.
Reopening month. Heat breaks late month, Safari and Mleiha resume and winter product returns at shoulder prices.

Where to stay in Sharjah
Heart of Sharjah / Al Gharb
culture trips, best overall base
Walk to heritage museums, souks, the Art Foundation and the Corniche, quiet at night by design.
Al Majaz / Buhaira Corniche
most visitors, best all-round base
Widest choice of lagoon front hotels and restaurants, facing Al Noor Island and 10 minutes to the old town.
Al Khan / Al Taawun
families, Book Fair and Expo Centre
Beach adjacent with resort style hotels by Al Khan Beach and the Aquarium, 15 minutes from the heritage core.
Kalba / Khor Fakkan (East Coast)
nature, second base for 1-2 nights
Mangroves, mountains and Gulf of Oman swimming, too far to commute daily from Sharjah city.
Al Jada / University City / Muwaileh
longer and budget stays
New master planned district and student food streets with good value, but car or taxi dependent for sights.
Think twice about
- Rolla / Al Wahda corridor
Dense, traffic choked commercial districts with scarce pavements and no tourist infrastructure. Hotels here are basic and hard to walk from.
- Industrial Areas 1-18
Workshops, truck traffic and labour accommodation with no tourist infrastructure. Low rates marketed as city centre are the tell.
- Al Nahda (Sharjah side)
Use with caution, not a blanket avoid. Residential towers at the epicentre of Sharjah to Dubai gridlock, frustrating as a cheap Dubai base.

Is Sharjah safe?
- Sharjah is completely dry. Do not bring alcohol in from Dubai, as possession and transport can bring severe penalties.
- Dress modestly in public, covering shoulders and knees. Women need a scarf only inside mosques, so carry one daily.
- Heat is the biggest real risk, then road traffic, then wadis in rain. Never enter a wadi if rain is forecast upstream.
- Sharjah is very safe overall with low petty theft. Solo women routinely report feeling comfortable on the Corniches and in souks.
- No public displays of affection beyond hand holding, no swearing or offensive gestures, and no photos of people without permission.
Sharjah travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Sahara Centre and Mega Mall are fine malls but pointless to travel for, as Dubai does malls bigger.
- Check the Eye of the Emirates wheel is spinning before a special trip, as it has had intermittent closures.
- Bargain at the Blue Souk or overpay. First prices can be two to three times the settled price, while gold by weight is transparent.
- Do not stack a Sharjah hotel with multiple Dubai sights in one day, as peak traffic collapses the plan.
- Do not copy a winter walking itinerary into summer, when outdoor sightseeing in the middle of the day is a medical risk.
Getting around Sharjah: public transport and more
- No metro in Sharjah. Metered taxis are plentiful and cheap, most cross city rides AED 20 to 45, and Careem and Hala work.
- Dubai buses cost about AED 10 to 17 off peak. Sharjah to Dubai taxis add a AED 20 cross emirate surcharge each way.
- Rent a car for Mleiha, Kalba and Khor Fakkan on trips of three days or more. Mountain roads are modern tunnel highways.
- Walk in clusters in Heart of Sharjah, the Corniches, Al Majaz, Al Qasba and Al Jada from October to April, and taxi between clusters.
- Sharjah Airport is 15 minutes from the centre and is Air Arabia hub. Dubai Airport is 25 minutes off peak and 90 plus at peak.
