Things to do in Salta
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Salta
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best overall, dry season, clean light and May to June is the empty connoisseur window.
Excellent dry weather and peak domestic season in July, Pachamama ceremonies in August.
Best alternative, spring and the Milagro in mid September, prime roads in October and November.
Wet festival season with heat, storms and road disruption risk, worst in late January and February unless coming for Carnaval or Serenata.

Where to stay in Salta
Centro

Paseo Balcarce
nightlife-led trips
Peña strip, bars and hostels, with real weekend noise on Balcarce-facing rooms.
Tres Cerritos
quiet, boutique and longer stays
Leafy affluent hills with birdsong and views, a short taxi from the plaza.
Villa San Lorenzo
nature, families and finca stays
Garden hotels and the quebrada at the door, quiet to sleepy after dark.
Cafayate
best second base, wine-led trips
Wineries on foot and by bike and the gorge in morning and evening light.
Purmamarca and Tilcara
overnight for the north

Think twice about
- Bus terminal fringe and far Avenida San Martín south-east
Transient, dimly lit and commercially dead at night with the city's most persistent petty theft reports and no sights or dining.
- Southern and western peripheral barrios outside the centre grid
Residential sprawl with no visitor infrastructure, poor late night taxi coverage and long walks on unlit streets.
- Isolated rural fincas without a car
Beautiful houses down dirt roads outside Cafayate or Cachi strand non-drivers at night with no restaurant or remis coverage.
- San Antonio de los Cobres as a casual base
Sleeping at 3775 metres unacclimatised brings headaches and ruined nights. Visit by day and sleep low.
