Things to do in Puerto Madryn
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Puerto Madryn
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Winter whales build through the season, with cold, wind, short days, thin crowds and the cheapest rooms. Penguins are absent.
The sweet spot, with whales at peak, penguins returning and nesting, and elephant seal breeding. October is the best month.
The whale and penguin overlap continues, chicks appear, and the air and water warm.
Summer brings penguins at maximum with chicks and sea lion pups, but the whales leave by mid December.
The orca window at Punta Norte runs on high tides, while penguins depart through March and April.
The gap month, with no whales yet, penguins gone and Punta Tombo closed. Avoid it for a wildlife trip.

Where to stay in Puerto Madryn
Centro / Rambla
first trip, all round base
Flat and walkable, with every restaurant, agency and excursion pickup within minutes and the pier in front of you.
Boulevard Brown south
resort stay, families, quiet beaches
Bigger hotels with pools and spas facing quieter beaches, a short taxi or long waterfront walk from the centre.
Puerto Pirámides
a whale season night or two inside the reserve
Dawn boats and dark skies, but tiny, seasonal and water restricted, and a poor base for Punta Tombo or the airport.
Think twice about
- Trelew
A working city with the museum and airport, but basing there adds an hour of commuting to every Madryn excursion. Visit, do not sleep there.
- Far northern outskirts and Aluar industrial corridor
No beach scene, no restaurant strip and nothing to walk to. Properties there serve workers, not visitors.
- Remote steppe cabañas without a car
Beautiful isolation that becomes a taxi dependency for every meal and excursion pickup.

Is Puerto Madryn safe?
- Madryn centre and waterfront are well lit and busy into the evening, and normal urban awareness is enough.
- Watch for wildlife on reserve roads at dawn and dusk, carry water and a full tank, and download offline maps.
- Accept boat cancellations as the safety system working, and keep hands to yourself around playful sea lions.
- Patagonian UV and dry wind are the daily health risks, so use a hat, sunscreen, water and layers every day.
Puerto Madryn travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- One day tours promising Puerto Pirámides, Punta Norte, Caleta Valdés and penguins together cannot do it at any quality.
- Elephant seal numbers are down by more than half after the 2023 avian influenza die off, so do not expect the old photographs.
- The Yellow Submarine is only as good as the underwater visibility and sometimes does not sail.
- On cruise ship days, take the earliest departures and eat late after the ship has sailed.
Getting around Puerto Madryn: public transport and more
- Central Madryn is flat and walkable, and taxis are cheap for Boulevard Brown, the Ecocentro and Punta Loma.
- Most flights land at Trelew, about 65 km away, and the airport shuttle is the default transfer.
- There is no public transport to El Doradillo, Punta Loma or inside Península Valdés.
- Inside the reserve, fuel up in Madryn or Puerto Pirámides, drive the gravel slowly and start very early.
