Things to do in El Calafate
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit El Calafate
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Peak summer: all tours run, longest days, highest prices and crowds. January is the absolute peak.
Best value sweet spot: autumn colour, thinner crowds, lower prices, trekking and navigations still run.
Spring shoulder: schedules reopen, wildflowers and foals, prices below summer, but the strongest wind of the year.
Winter off season: many closures, ice trekking paused roughly June to mid July, short cold days. Not for a first trip.
What's on
- Fiesta Nacional del Lago Argentino mid-February, about Feb 15-21
A week of free concerts and town celebration for the naming of Lago Argentino. Book rooms months ahead.
- Carnaval February/March, dates move with Lent
Smaller local carnival events that often fold into the Fiesta del Lago period.
- Aniversario de El Calafate 7 December
Town foundation anniversary with local parades and events, a bonus rather than a trip pick.
Best things to do in El Calafate
Perito Moreno Glacier
The essential visit: a moving, calving glacier seen from 4 km of boardwalks and balconies at several heights.
Safari Náutico Perito Moreno
A one hour boat along the glacier face that changes your sense of scale, with no fitness or age barrier.
Todo Glaciares
Full day sailing among Upsala icebergs to the 135 metre Spegazzini face, the highest glacier wall in the park.
Glaciarium Museo del Hielo Patagónico
Interpretive ice museum that improves a glacier visit if seen first, and the town's best bad weather option.
Reserva Laguna Nimez
Flat wetland loop with flamingos, swans and shorebirds at walking pace, best at sunset when the wind drops.
Punta Walichu
Tehuelche cave paintings and hand stencils on the lake shore, valued for context and place rather than vivid art.
Avenida del Libertador
The town ritual: calafate berry ice cream and jam, chocolate, wool and mate shops, and gear rental for trek days.
Centro de Interpretación Histórica
Small museum giving a compact, honest overview of indigenous, explorer and sheep farming eras in under an hour.
Where to stay in El Calafate
Town Centre / Avenida del Libertador corridor
first trip, all-round base without a car
Walk to restaurants, agencies, pickups and Laguna Nimez. The only base that makes town easy without a vehicle.
Lakefront & Hillside (Costanera / Bahía Redonda)
couples and view-seekers who still want to walk to dinner
Big Lago Argentino views and quieter nights for a 5 to 15 minute walk, with a real hill back after dinner.
Remote estancias west toward Perito Moreno
a splurge night or two, not a touring base
Wake in the steppe and eat superbly on site, but give up town choice. Best split with two nights in town.
Think twice about
- Far east airport-road and far-western outskirts
Marketed as El Calafate but taxi dependent for every meal and pickup, with no walkable benefit.
- Isolated Ruta 11 / Ruta 40 highway motels without a restaurant
In peak wind or winter a breakdown or cancelled transfer strands you with nowhere to eat.

Traditional alternative for homemade pasta, ravioles, milanesa and risottos, praised for fresh pasta.

Is El Calafate safe?
- Patagonian wind can knock an adult off balance: use handrails and close car doors with two hands.
- UV and ice glare are strong even when cold: sunscreen and sunglasses are glacier equipment.
- Dress in layers on every excursion and carry water, as refill points in the park are limited.
El Calafate travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not do Perito Moreno in 2 hours on a bus tour; time on the walkways is the cheapest upgrade.
- Upsala's front has retreated: you sail its icebergs, while Spegazzini is the close up glacier.
- Bring a picnic to Perito Moreno instead of the expensive park restaurant or panned tour lunch boxes.
- Pick one ice bar only: Glaciobar and Yeti are the same joke told twice.
Getting around El Calafate: public transport and more
- Town is walkable; Perito Moreno, Punta Bandera, Cerro Frías and the airport all need a transfer, bus, taxi or rental car.
- Confirm your tour pickup point the night before by WhatsApp, which is how local operators run.
- Fly from Buenos Aires in about 3 hours; airport to town is a fixed price taxi or shared shuttle of about 30 minutes.
