Things to do in La Rioja
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit La Rioja
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months, autumn and spring bring milder weather, no summer rain and comfortable canyon and mountain days.
Chaya fills the capital in peak summer heat, hotels sell out and booking months ahead is essential.
Maximum heat, with the Chayero Sanagasteno festival and the close of the Tinkunaco cycle in early January.
Dry and mild in the capital for the San Nicolas coronation feast, but the high Andes are at their coldest.
Furnace heat for sightseeing, redeemed on 31 December by the Tinkunaco encounter at noon.

Think twice about
- RN 38 roadside motels, southern approaches
Car dependent, dark and aimed at one night highway traffic, with nothing walkable for a visitor base.
- Unlit peripheral streets beyond Parque de la Ciudad and past the bus terminal at night
An emptiness and lighting problem rather than a neighbourhood problem. Take a short remise ride instead of a long walk.

- Watch belongings at Chaya, the one dense and alcohol fuelled crowd of the year.
- Carry water, layers and sun protection on every excursion, heat and altitude are the real risks.
- Altitude at Laguna Brava and Station 9 exceeds 4200 metres, sleep lower first and hydrate.

La Rioja travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The one day Talampaya plus Ischigualasto dash from the capital short changes two UNESCO parks.
- You cannot drive the Talampaya canyon yourself, visits are guided circuit only.
- Midday summer sightseeing fights the siesta, when museums and shops shut and streets are oven hot.
- Do not expect Mendoza wine infrastructure in Chilecito, the wine is real but the visitor offer is small.
Getting around La Rioja: public transport and more
- Walk the centre, it is flat and every museum and restaurant is under 15 minutes from the plaza.
- Use remises after dark and for Parque de la Ciudad, the southern hotels and the airport.
- Rent a car or book excursions for the province, city buses do not solve Talampaya or Laguna Brava.
- Fuel up in the capital, Villa Union and Chilecito, distances are long and stations are sparse.
