Things to do in Rotorua
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Rotorua
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Summer peak, warm and busy with the longest evenings, highest prices and key tours booking out, February is the sweet spot.
Autumn, the insiders pick, mild days, thinning crowds and Crankworx in March, with brief Easter and school holiday spikes.
Winter, cold mornings, dramatic steam and the best soaking, smallest crowds and cheapest rooms, July is typically the rainiest month.
Spring shoulder value, gardens peak, kiwi hatching season begins and November trails are quiet, weather is changeable.
Best months overall for the balance of weather, crowds and price.

Think twice about
- Central Fenton Street motel cluster
Many motels here were used for emergency housing from 2020, with reported antisocial behaviour and groups outside at night. Book a named, recently reviewed property or stay lakefront.

Recent visitor advice is to avoid walking alone late at night here. Use Eat Streat and the lit lakefront and take a taxi back if it is late.

- Book Atticus Finch, Poco, Sabroso and Stratosfare for dinner, walk ins fail on summer Saturdays.
Is Rotorua safe?
- Stay on boardwalks and behind fences everywhere, crust can be centimetres thick over boiling water and new vents open without warning.
- Keep children hand close in geothermal areas and never swim in signed thermal streams.
- Treat informal hot creeks with caution for water quality, slippery rocks and car break ins, leave nothing in the car.
- Vet any Fenton Street property in recent reviews and do not park valuables visibly in cars overnight in the centre.
- Summer sun and NZ UV are fierce, use sunscreen on shadeless geothermal walks.
Rotorua travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Doing three geothermal parks is the top waste of money, one main park plus free Kuirau and a soak is the right dose.
- Lady Knox Geyser is a presented, soap triggered eruption, enjoy it if there but do not build a morning around it.
- Generic animal and maze attractions on the highway strips are first to cut for adults, spend on the Kiwi Hatchery or Wingspan instead.
- Central tourist shop markups on carving and pounamu, buy at the Te Puia institute store or a real carving studio.
- Skyline per ride top ups and photo packages at rafting, ZORB and Canopy quietly bleed budgets, decide bundles before you go.
Getting around Rotorua: public transport and more
- A car changes everything, attractions sit 5 to 35 km apart and the bus will eat your trip.
- Without a car, base lakefront or CBD and choose tours with hotel pickups, using CityRide buses only for in town hops.
- Taxis and rideshare are thinner than in Auckland, pre book late pickups.
- Parking is free at almost every attraction and motel, central street parking near Eat Streat is metered.
- The sulphur smell is strongest near vents, Sulphur Point and Whakarewarewa, and milder at the lakefront and Kawaha Point.
