Where to stay in Rostock
Warnemünde
beach and summer trips, most first timers staying 3+ nights
Alter Strom, beach and station are on foot, with Rostock centre about 20 to 25 minutes by S-Bahn.
Rostock Altstadt / Stadtmitte / Stadthafen edge
city breaks, winter, food and nightlife, 1 to 2 night stays
St Marien, the old town walk, restaurants and trams are all close, and the beach becomes a day trip.
Kröpeliner Tor Viertel (KTV)
younger travellers, longer stays and value apartments
Student quarter with cheap eats, bars and a lived in feel, with excellent tram links both ways.
Hohe Düne
self contained luxury resort stays
Marina resort and sailing base across the ferry, perfect to stay in and frustrating for nightly variety.
Südstadt / Barnstorf
zoo visits and niche stays
Quiet residential area handy for the zoo and Trihotel wellness, with tram links to the centre.
Think twice about
- Lichtenhagen, Groß Klein and Lütten Klein
North west slab block estates far from sights and beach, thin on restaurants and nightlife and poorly connected late.
- Dierkow and Toitenwinkel
Residential slab block districts east of the Warnow, isolated by the river with few evening places to eat or drink.
- Überseehafen and the immediate Hauptbahnhof south side as a base
Working industrial port and dull traffic heavy station streets strand visitors without a car and add friction to outings.
- Markgrafenheide and Hohe Düne without a car
Pleasant but small and separated, so in winter or a wet week you can feel marooned with little variety.

Is Rostock safe?
- Rostock and Warnemünde are very safe by German standards, with normal care in festival crowds and for bikes and trams.
- Swim only in lifeguarded sections, as rip currents by groynes, cold water shock and jellyfish are the real risks.
- Harbour edges and the Westmole are dangerous in storm weather, so respect closures when waves wash over.
- There is no Rostock base with a severe homelessness or open drug scene problem to avoid.
Rostock travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Berlin cruise day trip means 5 to 6 hours travelling for a rushed few hours in Berlin.
- Cruise ships crowd Alter Strom and the lighthouse between about 10:00 and 15:00, so do the beach or old town at midday.
- Teepott Restaurant is a landmark building with a middling kitchen, so drink there and dine elsewhere.
- IGA Park alone is low value out in Schmarl unless a concert or the museum ship is the point.
- Hotel Neptun at full five star price needs recent reviews checked against aja and Hohe Düne.
- Warnemünde gulls take fish rolls and ice cream from hands, so shield food and never feed them.
Getting around Rostock: public transport and more
- S-Bahn S1 links Rostock Hbf and Warnemünde in about 20 to 25 minutes and is the core transport strategy.
- Rostock trams cover Altstadt, Stadthafen, KTV, Südstadt and the station, and a Deutschlandticket covers local transport.
- The Warnow ferry links Warnemünde and Hohe Düne frequently for a small fare, essential for the marina and resort.
- Bikes are the default local vehicle on flat coast and Heide paths, and many hotels lend them to guests.
- A car is a liability for the core trip, as Warnemünde parking fills by late morning in July and August.
