Think twice about
- Remote parts of Rangamati district
Violence and criminal activity are reported particularly in remote parts, and remote lake inlets have thin coverage, few services and the hardest checkpoint and permission questions.
- Kaptai Dam restricted areas
Critical infrastructure with fences, guards and photography limits. View only from public roads and viewpoints and obey instructions at once.
- Unlit lakeside and park edges after dark
Boat movement stops, the town quiets early and there is no visitor nightlife infrastructure, so plan days in daylight.

Is Rangamati safe?
- Communal and political violence can occur in the wider Hill Tracts, particularly in remote parts, and roadblocks or a local incident can close movement at short notice.
- Avoid demonstrations and political gatherings, follow checkpoint instructions without argument, and do not photograph soldiers, checkpoints or dam restricted areas.
- This is a malarial hill district in Bangladeshi guidance, so use repellent, cover up and sleep screened or under a net, worst in and after monsoon.
- Emergency number is 999, and serious medical care means Chattogram, hours away.
Rangamati travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- A dry season Shuvolong trip sold as a waterfall spectacle, when the falls shrink to a modest cascade.
- A boat day with no agreed route that becomes a short loop and a long commission lunch stop.
- Whole fish or special dishes ordered on an island with no price asked before cooking.
- Treating Rangamati as a casual Chattogram add on with no permission, no checkpoint time and no return margin.
Getting around Rangamati: public transport and more
- Come by road from Chattogram, about 77 km in roughly two to three hours with checkpoint stops, and allow far longer in monsoon rain.
- Hire boats at Reserve Bazar, Tabalchari or the Parjatan ghat, with route, stops, lunch island and return time agreed before departure.
- Use CNG auto rickshaws in town with the fare agreed before you ride, and walk only inside the compact town centre.
- Ask for life jackets on every boat, especially for children and in monsoon water, because they are not always offered.
