Things to do in Bandarban
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Bandarban
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry, cooler winter, the travelling window, with the Nilgiri cloud sea most reliable in December and January.
Heat and haze build and waterfalls thin, but mid April brings the Boisabi New Year festivals to town and the villages.
Pre monsoon storms, rising rivers and provisional plans, with Buddha Purnima at the Golden Temple by the lunar calendar.
Monsoon. Peak landslide risk in June and July, cut roads, a dangerous river and interior touring off the table.
Rains retreat, waterfalls stay full, hills are greenest and cloud season begins, but damaged roads still fail after late storms.
What's on
- Boisabi and Sangrai New Year festivals 12 to 16 April

Think twice about
- Thanchi interior beyond Tindu, including Remakri and Nafakhum
Under an administrative ban as of November 2025, with tourists permitted only as far as Tindu. Do not enter.

- Hill roads after dark and in heavy monsoon rain
Steep, unlit roads with landslide and washout risk, at their worst in June and July. Travel by day and stop in bad weather.

Is Bandarban safe?
- Communal violence, crime and kidnapping risks are live in the district, and permit controls and checkpoints govern every main road.
- Carry passport and permit at all times and register at every army and police checkpoint on your route.
- June and July carry the highest landslide risk. In the monsoon, do not swim at waterfalls and do not push a driver to run a cut road.
- There is no reliable medical care or mobile signal in Ruma and Thanchi. Malaria and dengue occur, so use repellent and seek advice on antimalarials.
Bandarban travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Anyone offering to take you to Nafakhum while the ban stands is offering an illegal trip with no registration and no help if it goes wrong.
- Old guidebooks and videos present Keokradong, Remakri and Nafakhum as simply open. Their status has changed repeatedly since 2022.
- A solo traveller pays for a whole jeep and guide alone, which wrecks a budget trip.
- Never photograph checkpoints, soldiers or army camps. It can end the trip on the spot.
Getting around Bandarban: public transport and more
- Hire a chandergari open jeep by the vehicle, seating about 12 to 14, and agree the route and price before setting off.
- Recent planning figures run BDT 3,000 to 5,000 per vehicle for a Nilgiri day and BDT 12,000 to 14,000 direct to Boga Lake, reconfirm on the day.
- Use a CNG auto rickshaw only for Nilachal and the Golden Temple. Never self drive the hill roads.
- Buses link Bandarban town with Chattogram in about three hours. The nearest airport is Chattogram.
