And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kuakata
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Winter is the season: dry, cool and calm, with the clearest sunrise and sunset skies, migratory birds and the shutki drying season.
Heat and humidity build and pre-monsoon storm risk starts, balanced by Sangrai, the Rakhine New Year water festival, in mid April.
Pre-monsoon edge with cyclone risk at an annual peak: Cyclone Remal made landfall in Patuakhali district in late May 2024.
Monsoon: heavy rain, rough seas, suspended boats and launches at times, no swimming, and the highest dengue risk of the year.
Transition month, rains easing but the second cyclone peak runs through October, and Rash Purnima brings devotees to bathe at dawn.
What's on
- Sangrai mid April, around 14 to 17 April
Rakhine New Year festival ending in Jalkeli water play, centred in Kuakata on the Rakhine paras such as Keranipara and Misripara.
- Maghi Purnima full moon in January to February
Hindu and Buddhist devotees take a holy bath in the sea at Kuakata, with fairs around the temples.
- Rash Purnima full moon in October to November
Hindu devotees take a holy dip in the Bay of Bengal at dawn at Kuakata, with a fair around the beach and temples.

The best known Rakhine temple near the beach, with a large Buddha image and old wells tied to the town name.
Misripara Seema Buddha Temple
A century old Rakhine temple at Misripara holding a very large Gautama Buddha statue, the cultural high point here.
Keranipara
The Rakhine neighbourhood nearest the beach, where women weave lungis and textiles on household looms.
Shutki Palli

Where to stay in Kuakata
Beach road and Zero Point
first trip, car free, sunrise and sunset on foot
Walk to the beach for both sunrise and sunset, the fish fry stalls at night, and boats and drivers in the morning.
Sikder Resort area
families and groups wanting a self-contained resort
A resort base with pool, gardens and in-house dining, treating the beach as a trip out rather than a walk from the door.
Think twice about
- Isolated east and west beach stretches after dark
No lighting, no lifeguards and no facilities on the empty chars and forest edges at night. Watch sunset, then head back to the lit beach road.
- Chittagong Hill Tracts
Not near Kuakata, but flagged for any wider Bangladesh trip: serious unrest, crime and kidnapping risk there makes it an area not to travel to.

Is Kuakata safe?
- Avoid protests, strikes and large gatherings: rallies can turn violent, and follow local authority advice.
- There is no lifeguard service on Kuakata beach: swim only in calm weather, close to shore, never alone or at night, and obey Tourist Police warnings.
- This is a cyclone exposed coast: cyclone risk peaks around April to May and October to November, and the monsoon sea from June to September is not for swimming.
- Emergency number in Bangladesh is 999, and the nearest serious hospitals are hours away in Patuakhali, Barisal and Dhaka, so carry evacuation insurance.
Kuakata travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Unagreed motorbike, easy bike and boat fares are the main tax on visitors here: agree the total before you move.
- Confirm the price of fish by weight before it is cooked, at stalls and restaurants alike.
- Do not travel to Misripara on old information: reports in October 2026 said the monastery was closed to visitors indefinitely.
Getting around Kuakata: public transport and more
- Road from Dhaka runs over the Padma Bridge via Barisal and Patuakhali: plan 7 to 9 hours by car and 9 to 11 hours by bus.
- The overnight launch from Dhaka Sadarghat to Barisal or Patuakhali is comfortable in a cabin, but leaves 2 to 4 hours of road to Kuakata.
- Hire a motorbike with a local driver for the sight circuit, and agree the total price, stops and waiting time before you start.
- Ask about tide times the night before: Fatrar Char is best at low tide, Gangamati is sunrise, Lebur Char is sunset.
