Is Pretoria safe?
- Pretoria's risk is property crime: smash-and-grabs at intersections, car break-ins, opportunistic theft. Violent crime concentrates where visitors have no reason to be. Stay east of the CBD (Brooklyn, Menlyn, Waterkloof, Arcadia), use Uber or Bolt after dark, keep car doors locked and valuables out of sight. Emergency: police 10111, ambulance 10177 (or 112 from a mobile).
Pretoria travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Big Five day trip promises: the real Big Five reserves are 3-5 hours away. Do Rietvlei or Groenkloof honestly instead.
- Curio shops at the monuments charge tourist prices; Hazelwood markets are cheaper for the same crafts.
- Unlicensed taxis at the Gautrain station: ignore them, order an Uber.
- Leaving anything visible in a parked car: the smash-and-grab risk is real at intersections.
Getting around Pretoria: public transport and more
- Uber and Bolt are the default: cheap, safe, and everywhere in the eastern suburbs. Use them instead of street taxis.
- The Gautrain runs from Hatfield to Sandton, Rosebank and OR Tambo airport in 35-45 minutes: the sane way to do Johannesburg for a day.
- A Re Yeng buses are cheap (R13-35) but built for commuters, not tourists.
- Rental cars make sense for the reserves. Keep doors locked, windows up at intersections, nothing visible on the seats.
- Do not walk in the CBD or Sunnyside after dark. Brooklyn and Menlyn are fine on foot by day.
