Things to do in Potsdam
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Potsdam
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring shoulder sweet spot. Parks green up, asparagus season runs from mid April, and late April to May is locals' favourite Potsdam.
Peak and Potsdam's glory. Long evenings, swimming lakes open, full boat timetables and terrace dining, with crowds peaking 11:00 to 14:00 at Sanssouci.
Connoisseur season of golden park colour and thinner crowds. September is arguably the best single month as summer hours mostly hold.
Winter is quiet, partial and atmospheric. Many smaller park buildings close, boats largely stop and days are short, offset by Christmas markets and empty palace interiors.
Best months overall: May, June and September.
Worst period is mid January to mid February: post markets, maximum closures and minimum light.
What's on

- Potsdamer Schlossernacht (Potsdam Palace Night) August, usually one weekend

- Bike lanes are fast and locals expect you to respect them. Do not wander in cycle paths while photographing palaces.
- Swim only where bathing is signed, watch boat traffic on the Havel channels and heed water quality notices after heavy rain.
- Palace parks close around dusk or at posted winter times. Glienicke Bridge and lake paths are unlit in stretches after dark.
Potsdam travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Trying to do Potsdam in four hours from Berlin means the busiest palace at the busiest hour and missing the city. Minimum worthwhile is a full day, proper is two nights.
- Touring every palace interior blurs by the third gilt room and tickets stack. Two interiors per day maximum, the parks are free and are the art.
- Captive cafes inside Sanssouci Park charge premium prices for average food. Use the Drachenhaus in park, or eat in the Quarter, at Meierei, or picnic from a bakery.
- Filmpark Babelsberg is a family theme park, not a working studio tour. Non families should choose the Filmmuseum instead.
- The Biosphere is a rainy day with kids fallback, not a top five reason to come. The Hauptbahnhof mall is for supplies only.
- Many palaces close Monday or Tuesday and several park buildings close or cut hours roughly November to March. Check the per palace calendar on spsg.de.
- Small bakeries, market stalls, boat kiosks and pensions can still be card reluctant. Carry 40 to 60 euros in cash.
Getting around Potsdam: public transport and more
- S-Bahn S7 and regional trains reach Potsdam Hauptbahnhof from Berlin in 30 to 40 minutes. You need an ABC zone ticket, an AB ticket is not valid.
- Trams and ViP buses cover station, centre, Sanssouci, Babelsberg and Cecilienhof. Buses 695 and 603 are the palace workhorses.
- Bikes beat everything for palace days. Rental shops sit by Hauptbahnhof and in the centre, and park cycling is allowed on main paths.
- Do not drive for sightseeing. Palace parking fills by 10:30 in summer and trains, trams and bikes are faster door to door.
- From BER airport allow 50 to 70 minutes by regional train or bus via Berlin. Check bahn.de for your flight time.
