Things to do in Porto Alegre
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Porto Alegre
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best all round months, warm and drier, with the Orla at its best and no festival price spikes.
Summer is hot and humid at 30 to 35 degrees with heavy thunderstorms, and Carnaval is low key here.
Winter is genuinely cold at 5 to 15 degrees with the minuano wind, ideal for churrasco, red wine and the Serra.
September is the biggest month, with Semana Farroupilha and Porto Alegre em Cena.
Wine harvest season in Vale dos Vinhedos runs roughly January to March.
What's on
- Acampamento Farroupilha late August to 20 September
Hundreds of piquetes in Parque Harmonia cooking over open fires, ending with the 20 September parade.
- Semana Farroupilha to 20 September

Where to stay in Porto Alegre
Moinhos de Vento
first trip, food trips and evenings on foot
Leafy, upscale and the restaurant quarter around Parcao and Padre Chagas, on higher ground east of the centre.
Praia de Belas and Pontal
lake views and modern hotels
Newer hotels along the Orla south of the centre, near Praia de Belas mall and a short ride to the Gasometro.
Centro Histórico
culture first stays on a budget
Museums, the market and the theatre on your doorstep and the cheapest base, but deserted in patches after dark.
Think twice about
- Ilhas, Sarandi and the low northern zones
Among the hardest hit areas in the May 2024 floods and still the most flood exposed, far from visitor sights with no visitor accommodation.
- Rodoviária and far Avenida Mauá
A transit edge rather than a neighbourhood, with the centre's worst after dark feel. Use it for transport, do not sleep there.
- Humaitá
Fine for a Gremio match at the Arena, but an industrial and flood affected district with nothing for a visitor at night.
- Centro Histórico as a night base for inexperienced travellers
Busy and fine by day, deserted in patches at night with visible street homelessness and petty crime risk. Visit by day and use rideshares after dark.

Is Porto Alegre safe?
- Keep phones put away in the Centro Historico after dark and around the Rodoviaria, and use rideshares at night as a system.
- If robbed, hand over belongings and do not resist. Police emergency is 190 and medical emergency is 192.
- Ask low lying lakeside properties directly what happened in May 2024 and what has changed since.
- In heavy rain follow municipal and GZH alerts, because streets can flood fast even in a normal year.
Porto Alegre travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Eat a local churrascaria rather than the international chain experience for the same or less money.
- Rua Goncalo de Carvalho is ten lovely minutes, not an afternoon destination.
- Gramado as a high season day trip is mostly a bus window, so stay overnight or skip that week.
- Pre 2024 guides need a same week check, because hours and market stalls changed after the floods.
Getting around Porto Alegre: public transport and more
- Use Uber and 99 as the default, cheap and plentiful, especially after dark and for Barranco and Komka.
- Walk the Centro Historico sights in one daylight loop, and walk inside Moinhos, Bom Fim and Cidade Baixa.
- Salgado Filho Airport is about 10 km away, reopened fully in December 2024, and the Trensurb metro links it to the centre.
- Spanish is understood better than English, and hotels manage English far better than markets or taxis.
