Winter is quiet, cheap and atmospheric. Christmas market runs late November to 23 December.

- Generally safe, including for solo travellers. Watch belongings in crowded pubs, festivals and trams.
- Emergency number is 112. Police 158, ambulance 155 and fire 150 also work.
- Tap water is safe and good. Pace the 0.5 litre pilsners and eat with them.
Plzeň travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Prague Pilsner Urquell Experience is not the Plzen brewery, its cellars or its oak barrel tasting.
- A large Czech foam head is correct, not a short measure. Learn hladinka, snyt, cochtan and mliko.
- Do not try Karlovy Vary, Loket and Mariánské Lázně all in one day by public transport.
- Beer bikes are a moving party, not sightseeing. The compact centre is best walked.
Getting around Plzeň: public transport and more
- Walk the centre. Trams 1, 2 and 4 cover Bolevec, Bory, the station and the brewery.
- Fast trains from Prague take about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes, roughly hourly.
- Use IDOS at idos.idnes.cz, the planner locals trust for trips beyond the centre.
- Czechia enforces 0.0 alcohol for drivers. If you are drinking, do not drive that day.
