Things to do in Český Krumlov
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Český Krumlov
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Late April to June is best overall: rafting from May, gardens in order, castle interiors running and manageable crowds.
Peak season: best river and Revolving Theatre, but day-trip crush 11:00 to 16:00, highest prices and booking essential.
Second-best insider month: warm colour, river floatable early on, harvest food and crowds falling away after week one.
Castle interiors wind down at month's end; gardens, museums and pubs carry a good food and walking month at low prices.
Quiet and part-closed: interior tours close for winter and many places cut hours, but the near-empty town suits photographers.
Advent and Christmas market season on Svornosti Square, best after dark once the coaches have gone; snow is possible, not guaranteed.
Coldest, quietest and cheapest, with the fullest closures; come for atmosphere and pair with Lipno skiing, not castle interiors.
Shoulder thaw: interiors reopen around April, river too cold for casual rafting and prices still low.

- Festival of Baroque Arts September
Period opera performed at the Castle Theatre, the connoisseur's festival.

Where to stay in Český Krumlov
Vnitřní Město (Inner / Old Town)
first trip, all-round base

Latrán (castle quarter)

Horní / eastern edge and river bends outside the core
quiet, value and cars
A 5 to 12 minute walk in with larger pensions, garden terraces, easier parking and lower prices for equivalent quality.
Think twice about
- Špičák / train-station and bus-station fringe
A 15 to 20 minute uphill roadside walk from the Old Town and charmless at night, only worth it for a deliberate budget or early departure.
- Outlying villages sold as Český Krumlov (Přísečná, Domoradice, along the E55)
Fine with a car and miserable without one; check the map, not the listing title.
- Directly on náměstí Svornosti during Five-Petalled Rose weekend
Festival programmes run in the square until late, so it is the worst place to sleep that weekend if you need rest.

Is Český Krumlov safe?
- Low-crime small town; watch belongings in peak crowds on the Lazebnický bridge and the square and use the hotel safe for passports.
- Real risks are physical: cobbles in rain, the castle descent at night, river weirs and alcohol plus water on rafting days.
- Emergency number 112; the Infocentrum on Svornosti Square is the practical help point. Tap water is drinkable.
- Carry some CZK cash for riverside pubs, smaller pensions, markets and rafting extras, as cards are not accepted everywhere.
Český Krumlov travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Day-tripping at midday: arriving at 11:00 and leaving at 16:00 in July is the worst version of this town.
- Wax, torture and mirror-maze attractions on the main drag are low-rated filler aimed at coach groups.
- Trdelník chimney cake stands are not Czech in origin and are sold at tourist prices; try a cafe pastry or honey cake instead.
- Main-square restaurant fronts charge for the view; walk 30 seconds into a side street for better food at fairer prices.
- Fake uncertified moldavite in souvenir shops; buy only from the Moldavite Museum shop or dealers with a certificate.
- Anyone selling a special castle bear experience is selling the free public courtyard view.
Getting around Český Krumlov: public transport and more
- Take the RegioJet bus from Prague, about 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours; the train needs a change at České Budějovice and takes 3.5 to 4 hours.
- Walk in town: the historic area is about a kilometre end to end, cobbled and hilly, so wear comfortable shoes and avoid heels.
- Parking is in signed edge lots P1 to P3 and the centre is largely pedestrianised; do not drive to a centre hotel door.
- The train station is a 20-minute walk from the centre; the bus station and the closer Špičák stop are handier.
