Things to do in Brno
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Brno
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months overall: warm long days, reservoir and cellar season overlapping, September burcak and harvest.
Good value shoulder months in April and late October: cooler, quieter, caves and undergrounds unaffected.
Spring: Easter markets, Museum Night and Majales in May, gardens and Palava hiking come alive.
Summer peak: Ignis Brunensis, MotoGP, festivals and reservoir swimming, but hardest bookings and hottest afternoons.
Autumn wine season: best for Mikulov and Lednice, vintage festivals, burcak stalls and Janacek Brno.
Winter: Christmas markets late November to 23 December, then cold grey January and February with cheapest hotels.

Where to stay in Brno
Historic Centre / Brno-střed
first trip, all-round base
Everything in the centre is walkable, with the best restaurants and both famous cocktail bars here.
Veveří / Úvoz / Kraví hora
quieter, local stay
Leafy residential streets with excellent pubs and cafes, 10 to 15 minutes walk to Freedom Square.
Černá Pole / Zemědělská
architecture lovers
The villa quarter around Tugendhat and the Botanical Garden, quiet and green with fewer late options.
Pisárky / Exhibition Centre (BVV)
fairs or VIDA visits only
Fine and safe by the exhibition grounds, but dead in the evening when no fair is running.
Think twice about
- Cejl / Bratislavská
Brno's most deprived streets with visible street homelessness, drug use and run down housing. Do not base here as a tourist.
- South of the main station: Dornych / Úzká / station underpass and Zvonařka
Dark underpasses, people sleeping in the station area and aggressive begging at night. Walk north into the Old Town instead.
- Far panel housing estates: Líšeň, Vinohrady, Bohunice outskirts
Perfectly safe but 30 to 40 minutes each way, losing Brno's walkability advantage as a tourist base.

Is Brno safe?
- Brno is low crime by European standards. Violent crime against visitors is rare and petty theft is uncommon.
- Normal city awareness suffices in crowded trams, at the station and in late night venues.
- The station, Dornych and Zvonarka area has visible homelessness and substance use. Pass through purposefully at night.
- Tap water is excellent, card payment is near universal, keep small CZK cash for towers, cellars and toilets. Emergency 112.
Brno travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Astronomical Clock as a must see: a fun marble ritual, a weak sight.
- Freedom Square photo menu restaurants and non bank exchange offices are poor value. Use ATMs or card and decline home currency conversion.
- Half day tours from Prague or Vienna only show the square and cathedral exterior and leave.
- Vankovka and Olympia shopping malls are ordinary malls, not an itinerary item.
Getting around Brno: public transport and more
- Walk the compact pedestrianised centre first. Station to Freedom Square is 10 minutes.
- Trams are the system under IDS JMK. Tap a bank card on the yellow validator or use the Poseidon or DPMB app.
- Night rozjezd buses all meet at the main station around the hour and fan out across the city.
- Most visitors arrive via Vienna, Prague or Bratislava. Brno's main station is a walk or one tram stop from the centre.
- Do not drive in the centre. A car helps only for Lednice, Mikulov and golf in one day.
