Things to do in Karlovy Vary
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Karlovy Vary
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months. May brings Spa Opening and pre festival calm, June is peak green and canoe season, September is harvest, concerts and fewer day trippers.
Peak. Early July is the film festival, the best energy and worst prices of the year. Late July and August are warm, busy and best for canoeing, cycling and evening promenades.
Christmas markets and Advent concerts by the Mill Colonnade and Thermal, smaller and more elegant than Prague, with thermal pools steaming in cold air.
Worst weather, cold and short days with some reduced hours, but the lowest prices, empty colonnades and steaming outdoor pools. The budget and solitude window.
The true shoulder gamble: mud season forest, improving town.
Shoulder months on the edge of the golf season, roughly March or April to October, with September and October bringing the Dvořák Autumn concerts.
What's on
- Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) Early July each year, about nine days
Central Europe's A list festival, about 180 films across some 14 venues, with red carpets at the Thermal and Pupp. Book everything months ahead or avoid entirely.
- Opening of the Spa Season first weekend of May
Ceremonial start of the season: blessing of the springs, historic costume procession, concerts and markets.
- Karlovy Vary Half Marathon May
Evening race through the colonnades, usually the weekend after Spa Opening. The town is festive, roads close and beds book early.
- Beethoven Festival August
Classical fixture centred on the symphony orchestra and Lázně I and the theatre.
- Dvořák Autumn September-October
Classical festival centred on the symphony orchestra, a reason to come in autumn.
- Christmas markets and Advent concerts December
Colonnades, lights and markets by the Mill Colonnade and Thermal.
Best things to do in Karlovy Vary

Diana Lookout Tower
Free 1914 tower above Grandhotel Pupp with the best view for reading the folded valley town.
Elizabeth Baths
Grand 1906 municipal spa with a pool and individual treatments, better value than hotel spas.

Where to stay in Karlovy Vary
The Spa Promenade, Stará Louka to Grandhotel Pupp
best overall, special occasions
Pedestrianised riverfront with colonnades at your door and forest behind, quiet at night and postcard pretty in the morning.
The Mill and Park Colonnade centre and Sadová
first trip, all-round base
Flat middle of the spa zone by Dvořák Park, closest to the Elizabeth Baths and Imperial Spa, everything walkable.
The Commercial Centre, T. G. Masaryka and around Hotel Thermal
best value, film festival
Flatter, cheaper and more practical, with better everyday cafes, 10 to 15 minutes flat walk to the colonnades.
The Westend villa quarter
quiet cure-style stays
Leafy grand 1890s villa streets around the Orthodox church, superb for early nights but with a real hill to dinner.
Drahovice, Tuhnice and Rybáře
long, cheap, self-catering stays
Where locals live, with the cheapest pensions and apartments and supermarkets, 15 to 25 minutes walk or a short bus to the spa zone.
Think twice about
- Around the upper railway station and the Tržnice bus terminal
Functional and traffic heavy, with underpasses and late night loitering that can feel scruffy. Fine to pass through, charmless to sleep beside.
- The Rybáře far-bank housing estate streets
Perfectly safe residential panel housing, but bleak and poorly lit feeling on winter evenings, and a bus ride from everything you came for.

- Jan Becher Museum: a few days ahead
- Beer Spa Beerland: a few days ahead
- Karlovy Vary Municipal Theatre: a few days ahead
- Golf Resort Karlovy Vary: a few days ahead
- Cihelny Golf & Wellness Resort: a few days ahead

- Accommodation for the film festival, Spa Opening and New Year, months ahead. Ordinary summer weekends, three to four weeks for promenade hotels.
- Le Marche, days ahead always, and a week for summer weekends.
- Saunia Thermal timed entry and Castle Spa programmes on summer and festival weekends.
- Becherovka and Moser tours on Saturdays, golf tee times May to September, and theatre tickets in festival periods.
- Prague buses at holiday weekends, especially the return seat.
Is Karlovy Vary safe?
- A very safe town, including at night, with violent crime against visitors rare. Watch for pickpockets in festival crowds and at the bus terminal.
- Use bank ATMs rather than standalone machines, and agree taxi fares or use a reputable dispatch or app.
- Spring water is medicine strength, hot, salty and laxative in quantity. Sip slowly, start cool and do not fill bottles from the hottest springs.
- Steep, sometimes icy cobbled lanes off the promenade in winter, and stair heavy forest paths, are the real physical cautions.
Karlovy Vary travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Prague day trip squeeze: two hours each way for four crowded midday hours produces the nothing here reviews. Stay overnight.
- Promenade restaurant roulette on Stará Louka. Never sit where a tout recruited you, and check the menu with prices before ordering.
- Bill surprises: some pubs add bread, cover or service items. Ask whether service is included and check the itemised bill before tipping.
- Souvenir inflation: cups, wafers, Becherovka and Moser pieces are cheaper or fresher a street or two off the promenade.
- Castle Spa expectations: price it as a beautiful pool entry, not a luxury service experience.
Getting around Karlovy Vary: public transport and more
- Walk the spa zone, which is largely pedestrianised and flat along the river but steep off it.
- From Prague, direct buses to Karlovy Vary Tržnice are the default, about two hours and dropping you 10 minutes walk from the colonnades.
- The bus terminal is the useful arrival point. The upper railway station is across the river and uphill, a bus or taxi ride with luggage.
- Do not plan to park in the spa core. Use hotel parking, the Thermal or commercial centre garages, or park and walk from the edges.
- Town buses are cheap and useful for Drahovice and Tuhnice bases and the upper station. The Diana and Imperial funiculars are transport too.
