Things to do in Palu
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Palu
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best window: driest months and calmest water for Tanjung Karang diving and snorkelling, with September festivals.
Good dry season months with fewer events and easy availability everywhere.
Wetter transitional months; the city stays visitable but Wera, paragliding and Lore Lindu are less reliable.
Worst window: peak wet season, Wera not recommended, paragliding often weathered out and Lore Lindu at its hardest.

Think twice about
- Balaroa
Memorial ground on liquefaction red zone land where a neighbourhood was destroyed in 2018. Visit respectfully in daylight, do not look for lodging here.

What to book ahead
- Prince John Dive Resort: a few days ahead
- Matantimali Paragliding Site: a few days ahead
- Lore Lindu National Park: weeks ahead
- Prince John Dive Resort: a few days ahead
- Book Prince John Dive Resort and its dives ahead, as capacity on the Tanjung Karang cape is small.
- Arrange Matantimali tandem paragliding ahead and keep a weather flexible day for it.
- Give a Lore Lindu expedition days of lead time for a driver guide, homestays and park arrangements.
- Book Palu flights ahead around Eid and Christmas to New Year, when they fill.
Is Palu safe?
- Palu sits on the active Palu-Koro fault in a tsunami bay; know your hotel evacuation route and nearest high ground, and move uphill at once after strong shaking at the coast.
- Do not swim at Talise, where crocodile warnings recur; swim and snorkel at Tanjung Karang and Pusat Laut instead.
- At Wera Waterfall use only calm shallow pools; the provincial tourism office records drownings in the main pool; avoid rainy season visits.
- Drink bottled or filtered water only, dress modestly away from the beach, and schedule hikes and flights for the morning heat.
Palu travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Talise is a city waterfront for sunsets, not a swimming beach holiday; the beach holiday is Tanjung Karang.
- Any offer of Lore Lindu as a day trip is a trap; it is a multi day expedition.
- Balaroa, Petobo and the floating mosque are places of grief, not ticketed attractions; go respectfully or not at all.
- Palu hotel listings use luxury and resort words loosely; the best hotels in town are good four stars.
Getting around Palu: public transport and more
- Fly into Mutiara SIS Al-Jufrie Airport (PLW) on domestic flights from Jakarta, Makassar, Surabaya or Manado; the South Palu hotels are about 10 to 15 minutes by car.
- Use Gojek or Grab cars and motorbike taxis in the city; the mikrolet minivan routes are impenetrable to visitors.
- Hire a car with driver by the day through your hotel for Tanjung Karang, Pusat Laut, Wera and Matantimali; there is no practical public transport version of these days.
- Download offline maps before Lore Lindu, where phone signal genuinely disappears.
