Best time to visit New Plymouth
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best overall: warmest and sunniest, summit season in full swing, Lights into January and WOMAD in March.
Summer brings long days, patrolled beaches and peak prices and crowds, especially from Christmas to mid January.
Autumn is calmer and still warm into April, then May turns wetter and the summit season ends.
Winter is the wettest and least sunny window, with the summit a serious alpine undertaking and the cheapest beds.
Spring is garden season, with Pukeiti rhododendrons and the garden festivals peaking in late October and November.

Is New Plymouth safe?
- Check the MetService mountain forecast and DOC advice before summit or crossing attempts, and turn back if conditions change.
- At Tongaporutu, know the low tide window and your turnaround time before walking the beach.
- Lock cars at trailheads and keep valuables out of sight. Emergency number is 111.
New Plymouth travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not fix the Pouakai Tarns or summit to one day, because the mountain is often in cloud on sunny coastal days.
- The Wind Wand is a walkway moment, not a standalone trip across town.
- These are wild surf beaches with rips and cold water, not calm swimming bays, so swim between the flags.
Getting around New Plymouth: public transport and more
- Walk the West End, waterfront and central Coastal Walkway, and cycle the walkway to Fitzroy.
- Rent a car from arrival for the gardens, Dawson Falls, Tongaporutu and every mountain trailhead.
- North Egmont is a 30 to 40 minute drive, Dawson Falls about an hour and Hawera about an hour.
