Things to do in Nelson
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Nelson
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Summer peak: warmest sea, everything open and long evenings, but January crowds, high prices and worst sandflies.
Autumn insider pick: harvest and Marchfest in March, swimmable sea into early April, crowds gone by Easter.
Winter: bright, frosty and cheap with empty tracks, but cold sea, reduced park schedules and dark by 6pm.
Spring shoulder value: blossom and lengthening days, cold water and winds that can scrub boat and skydive days.
Best months overall are February and March.

Five to ten minutes from the centre around the city beach, quieter at night and a drive or bus for most dinners.

Think twice about
- Richmond and Stoke as a base
Nothing walkable at night, no beach and no centre, so every meal and sight needs a car trip.
- Trafalgar and Hardy pub stretch, ground floor
Ground floor rooms on the busiest pub stretch are loud on Friday and Saturday nights in summer.
- ANZAC Park and Millers Acre fringe
This edge of centre has at times hosted rough sleeping and encampments, though it is a normal park by day.
- Haven Road and Port Nelson industrial strip
A working port and log truck corridor with diesel, early port noise and no neighbourhood amenity.

Nelson travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The World of WearableArt Awards Show is in Wellington, not Nelson; Nelson has only the museum gallery.
- Founders Heritage Park as a standalone sight displaces better sanctuary, gallery or park time.
- Golden Bay as a rushed self drive day turns three wonders into five hours of winding road.
- Anchorage and Kaiteriteri at midday in early January are the park at its most crowded.
- Cheap Richmond motels are the main accommodation trap for visitors without a car.
Getting around Nelson: public transport and more
- Walk the flat centre and use buses or a short cycle to Tahunanui.
- Beyond the city, Abel Tasman, wineries, Nelson Lakes and Golden Bay need a car, tour or shuttle.
- Nelson Airport is about 15 minutes from the centre, with taxis, shuttles and rentals meeting flights.
- No ferry comes to Nelson; the Cook Strait ferry port is Picton, about 2 hours 20 by bus.
