Things to do in Minot
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Minot
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months. June has long light and Midsummer, July has the State Fair and prime walleye, September has harvest colour and salmon starting.
Shoulder gambles. May can be mud and late snow or first spring, October can be crisp and golden or bring the first blizzard.
North Dakota State Fair, the states largest event, fills the city and pushes hotel prices up sharply.
Full winter. Short days, deep cold and wind, seasonal sights closed, and hockey, the Discovery Center, ice activities and skiing become the trip.
Mud, melt and flood watch season on the Souris River. Nobody local recommends April.

Think twice about
- East Burdick Expressway strip outside fair week
Not dangerous, but a dead zone for walking, dining and atmosphere, with expressway noise and fairground fencing as the view.

Upkeep and clientele vary sharply at the oldest budget motels. Choose a named property or check reviews from the last few months.

Is Minot safe?
- Winter is the hazard. Wind chills of minus 30 to minus 50 recur, frostbite can take minutes, and blizzards can close US-83 and US-2.
- The Souris River flooded catastrophically in June 2011, evacuating about 11000 people. Never drive through flooded roads and respect spring flood watches.
- Deer on highways at dawn and dusk are a year round driving risk, especially on US-83.
- Minot crime is below national averages and no neighbourhood needs big city fear, but downtown empties early on weeknights.
Minot travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Driving to Minot Air Force Base expecting a tour. There is no walk up visitor offer, the air museum is the aviation experience.
- Planning around Norsk Hostfest. It ended after 2025 and organisers announced in January 2026 that it would not continue.
- Spending evenings at Dakota Square and concluding Minot has no character. The character is on Main Street.
- Underestimating distances. Sakakawea is an hour, Bottineau skiing ninety minutes, Theodore Roosevelt National Park two and a half hours.
Getting around Minot: public transport and more
- You need a car. Sights are spread across hills and a valley, winter makes waiting outside a safety question, and excursions are 35 to 90 minutes by highway.
- Downtown Main Street, Citizens Alley, the Taube, the Railroad Museum and many restaurants form one walkable cluster once parked.
- Minot International Airport has hub nonstops and Amtrak Empire Builder stops daily, but never plan a tight connection off the train.
- In winter choose clearance and ideally all wheel drive, keep the tank above half, and watch for ice in parking lots.
