And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Maumere
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season, roughly April to October: calmest bay seas, best diving visibility and the most reliable roads, busiest in July and August.
Wet season, roughly November to March: heavy rain, rougher seas, cancelled boats and landslide delays on the mountain roads west.
The Marian months of May and October bring pilgrimage peaks to the statue of Mary, Mother of All Nations on Nilo Hill.
12 December is the anniversary of the 1992 earthquake and tsunami, marked with remembrance in Maumere, Wuring and on Babi Island.

- Arrange weaving village visits and island boat charters a day or more ahead through a hotel, operator or driver.
Is Maumere safe?
- Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki east of Maumere is an active volcano: treat its crater exclusion zone as absolute and check its status before travelling east.
- This coast was devastated by the 1992 earthquake and tsunami: follow BMKG updates, know your nearest high ground, and never ignore an official volcano or tsunami warning.
- Bay boats are small wooden boats: check weather, life jackets, load and return time before sailing, and never press a captain to sail in rough weather.
- Carry dive insurance and evacuation cover, because serious medical care and recompression facilities are far from Maumere.
Maumere travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Selling Maumere as a luxury destination: its resorts are good regional resorts and its top tier is a local ceiling, not international luxury.
- Treating Koka Beach as a safe swimming beach: the south coast surf is strong, there are no lifeguards, and calm conditions decide swimming on the day.
- Trusting old flight schedules that show a direct Maumere to Denpasar service, which recent schedules no longer operate.
- Bargaining hand woven natural dyed ikat down to factory prices, when a good cloth takes weeks to months of a weaver's work.
Getting around Maumere: public transport and more
- Frans Seda Airport (MOF) is about 5 km from town, served as of 2026 by NAM Air and Wings Air to Kupang, with onward regional services including Labuan Bajo and Makassar, and no current direct Denpasar flight.
- The Trans-Flores highway west to Labuan Bajo is roughly 500 km of winding mountain road, normally taken over 4 to 7 days via Moni, Bajawa and Ruteng, never as a single relaxed day.
- Distances lie on Flores: 50 km can take two hours, so plan town days, south coast days and road days separately.
- In town use drivers, taxis and ojek motorcycle taxis, and agree the price before you ride.
