Things to do in Maputo
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Maputo
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season and the best time to come: clear skies, 24 to 28C days, best safari conditions, calmest Inhaca crossings and jacaranda bloom in September to October.
Hot, humid wet season with afternoon thunderstorms. Marlin fishing and turtle nesting are the good reasons, rates soften except Christmas and New Year.
Worst months, plainly: hottest and wettest, cyclone season tail, park roads at their worst and the Kruger at its hardest game viewing and highest malaria point.
Christmas and New Year is family and beach season: Costa do Sol and Macaneta at maximum life, the business city at minimum.

Where to stay in Maputo
Polana Cimento / Polana
first trip, all-round base
Leafy upper town with the grand hotels, museums, art spaces and good restaurants, a short tuk-tuk from the Baixa.
Sommerschield
quiet, guesthouses and longer stays
Diplomatic residential quarter of wide quiet streets and small guesthouses, set back from hotel row.
Av. Marginal / Triunfo coast road
the view and the resort format
Sea facing rooms, pools and direct Marginal access for the golden hour walk, with evenings spent on hotel terraces.
Baixa (lower town)
deliberate, short, business or transport stays only
Historic centre with the station and markets by day, but it empties at night. Visit down the hill, sleep up it.
Costa do Sol
beach-weekend base, second stays
Lodges near the fish market and beach restaurants, lovely for a slow rhythm but 20 to 30 minutes from everything else.
Think twice about
- The Baixa after dark, around the station, port and Av. 25 de Setembro
Offices and shops close, streets empty and lighting is patchy, the area most flagged for opportunistic robbery and pickpocketing at night. Visit by day and sleep in Polana.
- Mafalala, Xipamanine and the informal bairros as an unhosted base
Real residential neighbourhoods with no visitor accommodation and unmapped lanes. Visit Mafalala properly on the IVERCA community tour instead.
- Maxaquene and Polana Canico fringe and the far northern suburbs (Zimpeto, Marracuene town)
Distance kills the trip: 45 plus minutes in minibus traffic to the sights, no evening restaurant scene, and savings repaid in taxi fares.
- Airport corridor, Av. Acordos de Lusaka
Functional for a 06:00 flight and joyless otherwise, with listing scores to match.

Is Maputo safe?
- Real risks are opportunistic: pickpocketing and phone or bag snatching in crowded markets, chapas and around the Baixa and station.
- Do not walk the emptied Baixa, quiet Marginal stretches or unlit streets at night. Go door to door by tuk-tuk or taxi.
- Keep phones off the street edge, leave jewellery at the hotel and use the room safe.
- Carry a certified passport and visa copy and leave the original in the safe. Ask to resolve any fine at the station.
- Use ATMs inside banks or malls in daylight and carry small notes.
- Malaria is present year round. Take prophylaxis advice, use repellent at dusk and drink bottled water.
- Cabo Delgado warnings cover the far north, 1,500 plus km away, and do not affect a Maputo itinerary.
- Respect surf and currents at Macaneta and Ponta do Ouro.
Maputo travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The fish market intermediary trap: buy seafood from the stall yourself, agree the cooking fee at the cook-shop and keep the tally.
- The Museum of the Revolution is overrated as a headline stop, erratic and thin for non specialists.
- There is no Baixa nightlife scene to wander into. The scene is in specific venues, reached by taxi.
- Do not swim off city beaches. Swim at Macaneta, local Catembe spots, Inhaca or Ponta do Ouro.
- Any Kruger or Inhaca price undercutting established operators by half is selling a problem in safety, licensing or your day.
- Buy roasted cashews at the Central Market or FEIMA after tasting, not shrink wrapped at the airport at triple price.
- Ask before photographing people and stallholders. Photographing government buildings, police and military installations is prohibited.
Getting around Maputo: public transport and more
- Maputo is a tuk-tuk city: txopelas are cheap, agree the fare before moving and carry small notes.
- Taxis are unmetered in practice. Have the hotel or restaurant call and set the fare.
- Chapas are crowded and pickpocket prone. Ride one with a local for the story, not as an airport transfer.
- Walk Polana, Sommerschield and the Baixa by day and the Marginal morning and evening. Tuk-tuk at midday in the heat.
- The airport is about 6 km, 15 to 25 minutes from Polana hotels. Arrange the hotel transfer on arrival.
- Self-driving is not recommended for a short stay. Police document stops are frequent and a hired driver costs less than the friction.
- Portuguese is the city language. English works in top hotels and tours and thins fast outside them.
- Cards work in big hotels and better restaurants. Cash rules markets, tuk-tuks and cook-shops.
