Things to do in Beira
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Beira
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season: the window for Beira and Gorongosa, with the best game viewing and a walkable city.
Cyclone and flood season, peaking January to March. Idai hit on 14 March 2019. Gorongosa is closed for much of this period.
Shoulder months: the park typically opens around late March or April depending on rain, and November brings heat and the first storms.

Macuti Lighthouse
Beira's 1904 red and white lighthouse at the end of Macuti Beach, with a rusting shipwreck in the sand beside it.
Beira Cathedral
The small white 1925 cathedral in the centre, built by local accounts with stone from the old San Gaetano fort.
Casa Infante de Sagres
The partially restored colonial landmark in the port area, now shipping offices, so an exterior visit only.
Grande Hotel Beira
The famous 1955 Art Deco ruin, occupied and unsafe inside, so view it from the street and never enter.
Praia Nova Market
The busy local market on the Praia Nova shore, best in the morning, where small boats cross toward Buzi.
Port of Beira
Mozambique's second port on the Pungwe estuary, watched from the riverfront as ships use the Macuti channel.

The grand CFM station where the Machipanda line to Zimbabwe and the Sena line inland begin, mostly freight now.

Think twice about
- Grande Hotel Beira interior
A ruined, occupied building. People live there, the structure is unsafe, and entering is neither safe nor respectful. View from outside only.
- Remote areas off main routes in Sofala
Mines may still exist in remote areas of Sofala away from main routes. Stay on main routes or take district authority advice.
- Beira after dark on foot
Mugging is common. Avoid all but emergency travel between sunset and sunrise and use a driver at night.

A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Gorongosa National Park: weeks ahead
- Golden Peacock Resort Hotel: a few days ahead
- Gorongosa needs booking weeks ahead in season, has a two night minimum at its camps, and is closed roughly mid December to March.
- Confirm Beira hotel bookings directly before paying, because post-Idai listings have a history of going stale.
Is Beira safe?
- Travel in the dry season, May to October, and treat November to April trips as cyclone contingent with flexible bookings.
- Carry your passport at all times, as Mozambican checkpoints do not accept copies or photos.
- Do not drink alcohol on public beaches, do not photograph port security, government or police sites, and ask before photographing people.
Beira travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Anyone selling the Grande Hotel as a hotel, a tour interior or an urban exploration entry is selling something that does not safely exist.
- Anyone selling Gorongosa as an easy day trip from Beira is wrong: it is three to four hours each way by road.
- Expedia's claim that February to April is the best time to visit Beira clashes with cyclone season and should be ignored.
Getting around Beira: public transport and more
- Beira Airport is about 30 minutes from the central hotels, with domestic flights from Maputo and regional links including Johannesburg.
- Macuti is about 8 km east of the centre, so the beach strip needs a taxi or driver rather than a walk from central hotels.
- The EN6 Beira Corridor to Zimbabwe and the EN1 north are the road lifelines, and both can be cut by floods or blocked at short notice.
