Think twice about
- Cabo Delgado and far northern Mozambique

Is Gorongosa National Park safe?
- Gorongosa is a malaria area. Take prophylaxis as advised by a health professional and use repellent and cover in the evening.
- The named danger in Mozambique is in the far north, including Cabo Delgado, the Niassa Special Reserve and northern Nampula districts, not in Sofala where the park sits.
- Stay on park and main routes: mines are possible in remote areas away from main routes, and avoid all but emergency travel after dark.
- Medical care is limited and Beira is hours away, so insurance with medical evacuation is essential.
Gorongosa National Park travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Building a trip around the Lake Urema boat safari, which is seasonal and cannot be reliably pre-booked.
- Planning a January to March safari when the main camps are closed and the floodplains are flooded.
- Comparing a Montebelo room rate with a fully inclusive Gorongosa Safaris rate without checking meals, activities and fees.
Getting around Gorongosa National Park: public transport and more
- Fly to Beira, then take a 3 to 4 hour road transfer or a charter flight of about 35 minutes to Chitengo airstrip.
- There is no self-driving on park game roads. All game viewing is with a park or camp guide.
- Park gates close in the evening, roughly 18:00 varying by month, so time arrivals for daylight.
