Things to do in Inhambane & Tofo
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Inhambane & Tofo
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Peak cyclone and wet season, hottest and most humid, with heavy rain, difficult sand roads and cancelled boats possible.
Shoulder season and often the sweet spot: calmer seas, warm water, good visibility, low crowds and big animals still around.
Dry season and humpback whale season June to October, cooler water, consistent mantas, and peak visitor numbers in school holidays.
Water warms, whale shark reports build with plankton, wet and cyclone season returns, and late December is loud and busy.
What's on
- Humpback whale season June to October
Humpbacks migrate past Tofo, heard on dives and seen from boats, with calves later in the season.
- Christmas and New Year peak Late December to early January
Tofo is at its loudest and busiest with South African holiday crowds. Book stays, boats and transfers well ahead.

Mercado Central de Inhambane

history, markets and transport stops
Stay one or two nights for the cathedral, museum, market and dhow ferry, not for a beach holiday.
Think twice about
- Isolated beach stretches between Tofo and Tofinho after dark
Unlit and empty at night. Walk in the village, arrange a ride back from outlying restaurants, and do not carry valuables on the beach.
- Remote inland tracks in Inhambane Province away from main routes
Mines may still exist in remote areas of southern provinces including Inhambane away from main routes. Stay on main routes and take local advice.

- Assuming Vilanculos and Bazaruto can be done as a casual day trip from Tofo. They cannot.
