Things to do in Lombok
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Lombok
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months overall. Dry, clear, Rinjani open, surf firing and seas calm without peak crowds.
Peak weather with worst crowds and prices. Book everything ahead and expect boats and trails at capacity.
Late December holidays are peak, while the wider wet season brings rain and rougher crossings.
Shoulder months. April is green with Rinjani reopening, October is warm and late dry with crowds dropping.
Wet season. Cheaper and greener with waterfalls at full power, but Rinjani is closed 1 January to 31 March.
What's on
- MotoGP Indonesian Grand Prix usually late September or early October
Biggest event of Lombok year at Mandalika. Book Kuta stays six months ahead or avoid Kuta that weekend.
- Bau Nyale Festival February or early March
Thousands gather at dawn at Seger Beach near Kuta to collect nyale sea worms, tied to Princess Mandalika legend.
- Perang Topat usually November or December
Hindu and Muslim communities throw sticky rice cakes at Lingsar Temple in gratitude for rice harvests.
- Lebaran and Eid al-Fitr end of Ramadan, by the Islamic lunar calendar; moves earlier each year
Ramadan changes daily rhythm and Lebaran week brings domestic tourism peaks and transport pressure.
- Nyepi March
Balinese Day of Silence does not shut Lombok, making it a useful alternative base that week.
Best things to do in Lombok

Tanjung Aan
Double horseshoe of white sand near Kuta, with the Bukit Merese headland for a sunset panorama over both bays.
Mawun Beach
A near perfect enclosed crescent with steep green hills and a calm centre for swimming.

Where to stay in Lombok
Kuta Lombok
first trip, surfers, beach lovers
Small surf town 20 minutes from the airport and the launchpad for the south coast beaches.
Gili Islands
turtles, diving, car free island life
Stay on one island: Air for balance, Trawangan for nightlife and diving, Meno for quiet romance.
Senggigi and Mangsit
comfort, families, sunset, transport hub
Widest hotel range and calmer sea, with day trips rather than a surf town base.
Senaru
waterfalls and crater rim treks
Cool green village base for one or two nights before or after a trek or waterfall day.
Tetebatu and Sembalun
slow, green Lombok
Tetebatu for rice terraces and culture, Sembalun for Pergasingan and summit treks, quiet by 8pm.
Sekotong and Southwest
seclusion and divers who want empty water
Stay two or three nights for the Secret Gilis without day tripping, and choose a stay with a good restaurant.
Think twice about
- Mataram
A working provincial capital with great warungs but no beach, resort strip or evening scene for visitors. Visit for food, do not base here.
- Bangsal Harbour area
A port, not a beach town, with tout hassle and nothing to do once boats stop. Pass through and sleep on a Gili or in Senggigi or Sire.
- Central Senggigi strip
Dated sections and derelict frontages, a poor expectation for light sleepers or anyone expecting Bali style polish. Mangsit and resort bays are fresher.
- Gili Trawangan east party strip
Loud until late near the harbour. The west coast of the same island is quiet and a different world.

Is Lombok safe?
- Check your government's current travel advice before you go.
- Scooter accidents are the biggest real risk. Sea conditions on Gili crossings and at surf breaks injure more tourists than crime does.
- Dress modestly outside beach, resort and Gili areas. Alcohol is limited outside tourist areas and drugs carry severe Indonesian penalties.
- Lombok is in an active seismic zone. Know your hotel evacuation route and do not trek Rinjani in the rainy season closure.
- Cards work at resorts and better Kuta restaurants. Warungs, drivers, boats and homestays are cash in IDR or QRIS, and small notes matter.
Lombok travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Senggigi main strip as a destination, Pink Beach as a drive only selfie stop, and unlicensed Rinjani offers below the going rate.
- Sade village at tour bus hour. Go early or choose Ende or Segenter for the same culture with less pressure to buy.
Getting around Lombok: public transport and more
- Fly into Lombok International Airport near Praya. Kuta is 20 minutes, Senggigi 60 to 75 minutes, Bangsal 90 minutes.
- No useful public transport for tourists. Rent a scooter with a licence and helmet, or hire a private car and driver for 2 to 4 people.
- Public boat from Bangsal to the Gilis departs when full. Buy at the official ticket office inside the terminal and carry your own bag.
- Kuta to Bangsal is 2.5 hours, Senggigi to Senaru 2 hours, Kuta to Pink Beach over 2 hours. Build itineraries around them.
