Is Leipzig safe?
- Leipzig is a safe large German city overall, main risks are Hauptbahnhof surrounds late at night and pickpockets in crowds.
- Use lit populated routes and west or centre exits at Hauptbahnhof, do not linger on the east forecourt.
- Stay on Karl-Heine-Strasse late in Plagwitz and Lindenau rather than unlit industrial side streets.
- Swim in designated Neuseenland areas and respect former mining bank signage. Emergency 112.
Leipzig travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Booking a cheap room east of Hauptbahnhof to save a small amount, the centre and Suedvorstadt are already cheap.
- Auerbachs Keller as your only traditional dinner at peak hour expecting intimacy, go for lunch or early dinner.
- Madler Passage as a shopping destination, it is architecture and history not a retail discovery.
- A generic GDR tour without Runde Ecke or Zeitgeschichtliches Forum inside it.
Getting around Leipzig: public transport and more
- Trams, buses and City Tunnel S Bahn cover every base on one ticket system via LeipzigMOVE or easy.GO.
- The centre is a 15 minute walk end to end and most first trips are mostly on foot.
- Airport Leipzig Halle is about 15 minutes by S Bahn to Hauptbahnhof, use west side exits for the centre.
- Cycle to Cospudener See through the Auwald, no car is needed except for Colditz style trips.
