Things to do in Kruger National Park
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kruger National Park
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Dry season. Thin bush and animals at the waterholes give the best game viewing, with the lowest malaria risk and clearest Panorama Route views.
The driest bush and most desperate waterholes make September and October the best predator viewing window, with building heat.
Wet green season. Superb birding and newborn impala, but thicker bush, afternoon storms, peak malaria risk and harder game viewing.
Festive season brings the year's highest prices and crowds inside the park despite the harder wet season viewing.

- The conservation fee is charged per person per day on top of accommodation. It was R602 per international adult to 31 October 2026 and usually rises each November.
Is Kruger National Park safe?
- Kruger is a malaria area, with risk highest in the wet months roughly October to May. Take medical advice on prophylaxis before travel.
- Treat any fever during or after the trip as possible malaria until a test says otherwise.
- Give elephants right of way, never swim in rivers or dams, and use a torch walking in camp after dark.
- Road accidents on the drive to the gates are the biggest statistical risk. Drive in daylight and do not stop on quiet rural stretches.
Kruger National Park travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Avoid Numbi Gate and use Phabeni or Paul Kruger gates for the Skukuza area instead.
- Moving camp every night is the classic mistake. Two nights per camp is the minimum, three is better.
- Do not chase sightings board reports across the park. Work your local roads at gate opening.
- Some estate properties market themselves as safari lodges with no Big Five drives. Check which reserve the drives enter.
Getting around Kruger National Park: public transport and more
- Drive yourself on the left at 50 km/h on tar and 40 km/h on gravel, and stay in the vehicle outside camps, picnic sites and hides.
- Gate times move with the seasons, from 04:30 camp openings in midsummer to 06:00 in winter, and late arrival at a camp gate is fined.
- A normal sedan or small SUV handles all public roads in the dry season. No 4x4 is needed for a standard self drive trip.
- Fly to Skukuza or Kruger Mpumalanga for the south, Hoedspruit for the centre, or drive the N4 from Johannesburg in about five to six hours.
