Things to do in Knoxville
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Knoxville
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Spring, one of the two best times: Big Ears, dogwoods, wildflowers, 60s to 70s F between rain fronts.
Hot and humid, 85 to 92 F with thunderstorms. Water season at Ijams, the river and Norris Lake; start hikes early.
Fall, the best time: UT football, colour peaking mid to late October at elevation, daytime 60s to 70s in October.
Winter, quiet and cheap: 40s to 50s F, Christmas lights, basketball season, easiest top restaurant reservations.
Best months overall in late April to May: warmth without humidity and no football pricing.
Best in mid October to early November on non game weekends for colour and cool air.
Worst for heat and humidity if the trip is outdoors heavy.

Where to stay in Knoxville
Downtown, Market Square / Gay Street / World's Fair Park
first trip, all-round base
Compact, walkable core with the theatre, Market Square, best restaurants and trolley within a few blocks.
UT Campus / Fort Sanders / Cumberland Avenue
game day and university business
By Neyland Stadium and student life; otherwise downtown a short walk away is quieter and better fed.

West Knoxville / Turkey Creek / Farragut
business or golf errands only
Suburban retail and chain hotels with easy parking, but entirely car dependent and far from downtown.
Think twice about
- Broadway / Mission corridor north of downtown, under I-40
Homelessness services, encampments and open air disorder concentrate here. Pass through in daylight, do not base or walk back at night.
- Magnolia Avenue motel row, east of downtown
Older budget motels on a major arterial with little pedestrian life and a long local reputation for drug and prostitution activity.
- Merchants Drive / Clinton Highway and Kingston Pike budget motel stretches
Arterial traffic, car lots and mixed cleanliness and safety complaints. Check reviews from the last six months before booking.

Is Knoxville safe?
- Downtown core is well lit and populated on theatre and restaurant nights. Do not walk the Broadway corridor north of I-40 or Magnolia Avenue at night.
- Old City gets loud late on Fridays and Saturdays; use ordinary late night sense around bars at closing time.
- Do not leave valuables visible in a car at trailheads; Urban Wilderness and greenway break ins are the petty crime locals warn about.
Knoxville travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge strips are a different trip, not a Knoxville or Smokies experience.
- Paying game weekend hotel prices without going to the game.
- Treating the Sunsphere as a half day headline attraction; it is a 30 minute orientation stop.
- Eating only on Cumberland Avenue on the Strip, and driving to the Smokies at 11am on an October Saturday.
Getting around Knoxville: public transport and more
- Downtown, Market Square, Gay Street and UT campus are walkable in a one mile core. Drive for Ijams, golf and all excursions.
- Rent at McGhee Tyson Airport, about 20 to 25 minutes south of downtown. Downtown garages are inexpensive and often free weekends.
- KAT runs buses and downtown trolley style routes; verify current trolley service. Rideshare is ready downtown, thin late in suburbs.
