Is Kiel safe?
- Kiel is safe by European standards, with bike theft and festival week pickpocketing the ordinary risks.
- Avoid walking through Gaarden on the east bank late at night, where there is an open drug scene.
- Wartime bomb disposals with announced evacuations happen several times a year, so follow hotel instructions if one lands on your stay.
- Swim only at supervised beaches and jetties, never in the Kiel Canal. Emergency numbers are 112 and 110.
Kiel travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Holstenstrasse and the Sophienhof mall are shopping, not sightseeing, and the fjord is five minutes east.
- Kiel's old town was mostly destroyed in the war, so expect the Alter Markt and St. Nikolai, not a Hanseatic old town.
- Skip pre made fish rolls at captive cruise terminal stands and use the fish stalls we recommend instead.
- The Baltic here is cold even in August and jellyfish peak in late summer, so read the beach flags.
Getting around Kiel: public transport and more
- Walk the west shore waterfront and use SFK ferries for the east bank, Laboe and Heikendorf.
- KVG buses link the main station to Schilksee, Falckenstein beach and Laboe, where the 102 takes about 25 minutes.
- Hamburg is about 1h10 by regional train, and overnight ferries run to Gothenburg and Oslo from terminals by the centre.
- The free Wik to Holtenau canal ferry carries bikes, and the fjord path runs along both shores.
