Things to do in Kendari
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Kendari
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Driest window of the year and the best months for Bokori, Labengki boats and Moramo, with the calmest seas.
Shoulder months that can work, but May and June rain in Southeast Sulawesi is genuinely uncertain in some years.
Wettest period with the roughest seas. City sights and food survive, island extensions become a gamble.
What's on
- Halo Sultra 23-27 April
The provincial anniversary festival in Kendari with regency exhibitions, a culinary festival, music and a tenun carnival.
- Kendari City Anniversary 9 May
The city birthday, dated to 9 May 1832, with municipal events around the date.
Best things to do in Kendari
Al-Alam Mosque
A large mosque on an island in the middle of Kendari Bay that appears to float at high tide, best seen in late afternoon.
Kendari Beach
The city waterfront at sunset, where tent cafes sell pisang eppe and sarabba and families watch the bay bridge light up.
Wisata Anjungan Teluk Kendari
The bay pier with rides, food courts and short tourist boats for views of the floating mosque and the bay bridge.
Jembatan Teluk Kendari
The lit cable stayed bridge across the bay mouth, and the sunset viewpoint for the port, the mosque and the whole bay.
Pantai Nambo
The closest beach to the city, calm at low tide with cheap local food, but reviewers consistently flag litter.
Pantai Toronipa
A long popular beach northeast of the city with watersports and food stalls, best early on a weekday before crowds.
Kebun Raya Kendari
A 113 hectare botanical garden in the Nanga-Nanga forest, the coolest and greenest half day without leaving Kendari.
Taman Budaya Provinsi Sulawesi Tenggara
The provincial cultural park for Southeast Sulawesi dance, theatre and tenun exhibitions, best timed to an event.
Where to stay in Kendari
Jl. Edi Sabara corridor, Lahundape / Kadia
first trip, all-round base
The hotel and restaurant spine with Claro, Swiss-Belhotel and Same Hotel as neighbours and the best ride hailing coverage.
Tipulu / Kendari Barat waterfront
bay evenings and seafood
Closest to Kendari Beach, the Tipulu fish restaurants and bridge views, with fewer full service hotels.
Andounohu / Lepo-Lepo, Haluoleo University side
quiet stays with a driver, airport departures
Green and residential near the botanical garden and university, but inconvenient without a car.
Think twice about
- Old port fringe, Pelabuhan Kendari / Kota Lama at night
A working port of trucks, warehouses and dim lighting with few good hotels or restaurants. Visit by day, sleep elsewhere.
- Mandonga market fringe as a hotel location
Congested and noisy from early morning with hostile parking. A market to visit, not a neighbourhood to stay in.
- Abeli / Nambo industrial coast as a base
Port and industrial frontage with almost no hotels. You would be isolated without a car for a beach better done as a day trip.
- Far south toward the airport without transport
Not unsafe, simply stranded. Lepo-Lepo and Andounohu only work with a driver or your own transport.

| Classic | IDR 900,000 a person |
| Splurge | IDR 1,800,000 a person |
A day of food, drink, sights and getting around, before the room
What to book ahead
- Sanggoleo Golf Club: a few days ahead
- Labengki Island: weeks ahead
- Wakatobi National Park: weeks ahead
- Claro Kendari: a few days ahead
- Book Labengki resorts, Wakatobi flights or ferries and Kendari buffer nights weeks ahead in the dry season.
- Never schedule an international departure on the same day as a Labengki boat or a Wakatobi return.
- Claro and the Edi Sabara corridor fill during conferences, so book the corridor early.
Is Kendari safe?
- None of these beaches has lifeguards. Wear reef shoes at Bokori and swim in the clear sections.
- Kendari is hot and humid all year with extreme UV. Do outdoors in the morning and late afternoon.
- Dress modestly away from the beach and around mosques, in line with local conservative norms.
Kendari travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Labengki or Wakatobi sold as a day trip is a day spent in transfers, not a trip.
- Nambo Beach has a litter problem and is not a pristine swim spot. Choose Bokori for clean water.
- Agree the price of market priced fish before it is grilled, everywhere and every time.
- Buy cashews in the city and taste first. Good local mete is not cheap, and very cheap nuts are small or old.
Getting around Kendari: public transport and more
- Haluoleo Airport is about 23 km and 35 to 40 minutes from the hotel corridor, with no airport train or useful bus.
- Grab and Gojek work in the city. Hire a car with driver for Moramo, Wawolesea, Taipa, Toronipa and the Bokori jetty.
- At the Bokori jetty, confirm with the Bajo captain whether the price is one way or return before boarding.
