- Stay on the paved path and behind rim fences, never climb down to a lake and never swim in the crater lakes.
- The viewpoint is about 1,639 m: expect a cold, windy dawn around 10 to 14 C, and bring a fleece, covered shoes and a torch.
- Do not feed the macaques at the viewpoint and car park, and keep food zipped away.
Kelimutu travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Arriving after mid morning: cloud often covers the lakes by then, even in the dry season, and afternoon is the worst bet.
- Gambling on one dawn only: stay two nights in Moni so a fogged in first morning does not end the trip.
- Assuming cards work: park entry and most Moni businesses are cash first, and the village ATM should not be relied on.
Getting around Kelimutu: public transport and more
- Fly to Ende, then about 2 hours by winding road to Moni; Maumere airport is about 3 to 4 hours east of Moni.
- Moni to the park gate is about 15 km uphill, roughly 45 to 60 minutes pre dawn by ojek, scooter or a guesthouse arranged car.
- From the car park the paved path to the main viewpoint takes about 30 minutes on foot.
