Where to stay in Kearney
I-80 Exit 272, Talmadge Street and 2nd Avenue hotel row

The main hotel cluster with waterparks and the conference centre, five minutes by car from everything and walkable to little.
Downtown on the Bricks and the UNK area
character and walking to dinner
The Bricks restaurants, theatre and campus are here, but formal lodging is thin and the best rentals book early.
North Kearney and the highway corridors
value and overflow on busy nights
Retail strips and corridor properties that are safe and practical, where you will drive to dinner and to the river.
Think twice about
- East 1st Street motel fringe toward the east interchange
Dated one night highway motels with truck noise and nothing walkable in any direction. Beds are cheap for a reason.
- Industrial edges of Highway 30 east
Safe but marooned, with no dining or evening life nearby. Choose the Talmadge row when the price gap is small.

- MONA closes Mondays and the World Theatre shows films mainly at weekends.
Is Kearney safe?
- Crane blinds and the viewing bridge are unheated and exposed. Dress as for skiing in March.
- Rural river roads are unlit and shared with deer, busiest at dawn and dusk.
- Spring and summer bring tornado watches, flash flooding and serious trail heat.
- Swim at the managed Cottonmill beach, not off Platte River sandbars.
Kearney travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Driving under the Archway without visiting the museum inside misses the attraction.
- Fort Kearny is a story and landscape site, not a rebuilt frontier town.
- The Hilltop Mall area is a declining retail zone, not a shopping destination. The Bricks is.
- Never stop on highway shoulders to view cranes. Use the Fort Kearny bridge instead.
- Check recent conditioning reports before paying premium fees at Awarii Dunes.
Getting around Kearney: public transport and more
- You need a car. Kearney sits at I-80 Exits 272 and 273 and has no meaningful visitor transit.
- Parking is free essentially everywhere, including downtown on the Bricks.
- Rowe Sanctuary is about 25 minutes east and Stuhr Museum about 40 minutes east.
- Most fly in visitors use Omaha, Lincoln or Grand Island airports and rent a car.
- The Bricks to UNK core walks well and the 30 plus mile trail system bikes well.
