Things to do in Jakarta
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Jakarta
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Peak rainy season and highest flood risk, with Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh in Glodok as the bright spot.
Rain easing. Ramadan and Lebaran fall here in 2026 and move earlier in later years, changing hours and emptying the city.
Drier and improving. Jakarta Fair opens in mid June and the city anniversary is 22 June.
Best all round months for rain, and among the worst for air quality. Independence Day is 17 August.
Late dry season turning wetter, good for golf and islands early, with rain returning through October.
Rain returns, afternoon storms build and flood risk rises into the new year.

Is Jakarta safe?
- Check air quality each morning in dry season and carry a KN95 mask for bad days, when PM2.5 can reach unhealthy levels.
- Never wade or drive through floodwater, which hides open drains. Stay in and reorder the day when your district floods.
- Wear bags across the body away from the road and do not hold a phone out at the kerb, against motorbike snatching.
- Drink bottled or filtered water and start street food gently, at busy cooked to order stalls.
Jakarta travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Planning three sights in three districts in one day. Pick one district per half day.
- Eating only in malls. Sabang, Glodok, Cikini and Blok M are the corrective.
- Going to Monas at midday on a weekend, when heat and the lift queue set the real price.
- Using unmetered taxis at stations and the airport instead of apps or official queues.
Getting around Jakarta: public transport and more
- Use the MRT north south line as the spine, with TransJakarta buses and the KRL commuter line for Bogor and Kota.
- Use Gojek and Grab for cars and motorbikes, ordering from a lobby or mall entrance with a clear pickup point.
- Hire a car with a driver for Bogor, Taman Safari or group days. Do not drive yourself.
- Walk one neighbourhood, then ride to the next. Distances between districts are not walkable.
