Things to do in Ilhéus
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ilhéus
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Among the best months. August is drier with winter surf, and October starts the main cacao harvest on the farms.
Hot and good value outside the Carnival window itself, with festive season Bahia at lower prices.
The rainiest stretch. June and July are wettest, dirt roads roughen and beach plans need flexibility.
Peak summer and Réveillon. Resorts fill, prices top out and booking months ahead becomes a condition.
Winter southerly swells give Ilhéus and Itacaré their biggest and most consistent surf of the year.
What's on
- Festa de São Sebastião 11 to 20 January
The city's patronal festival around the cathedral saint, with samba and capoeira in the local calendar.
- Carnival February or early March
A smaller, more local street and beach town Carnival than Salvador. The city fills and everything needs booking ahead.
- Festas Juninas and São João around 23 to 24 June
Forró, bonfires and festival food across Bahia, taken as seriously as Carnival and held in the rainiest month.
- Chocolat Festival Bahia mid July, classically 18 to 21 July
Brazil's largest chocolate and cacao festival at the Ilhéus convention centre, with origin brands, tastings and chef workshops.
- Gincana da Pesca early January
The traditional fishing tournament in the local port calendar, local colour at the start of summer.
- Festa das Águas December
A local December festival in the port calendar that closes the year at the start of the summer season.

Think twice about
- Centro Histórico as a night base
The centre empties after business hours, is poorly lit in stretches and its older hotel stock is visibly decayed. Visit by day, sleep on the beach.
- Malhado and Praia da Avenida port strip
Urban port water that is not the swimming beach, with a hotel and beach scene rated below the southern strip on every strand of evidence.

Is Ilhéus safe?
- Swim at populated patrolled stretches and respect flags and local advice on currents at Milionários and Praia do Sul.
- Do not walk empty beach stretches or empty Centro streets alone at night. Use ride shares after dark between neighbourhoods.
- Walk the Prainha trail in Itacaré in daylight, in company or with a local guide, following local robbery reports on that approach.
- Carry repellent year round for dengue mosquitoes, most of all on forest excursions, and treat midday sun as extreme.
Ilhéus travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Arriving for a preserved colonial city. The centre is a half day, not three days, and the house museum is modest and has closed intermittently.
- Swimming at Praia da Avenida or Malhado. They are urban port water, and the swimming starts at Praia do Sul.
- Paying craft market opening prices without bargaining, before calibrating prices at the chocolate factory shop.
- Buying a tour sold as entry to the Una Biological Reserve itself. The reserve is for research, and the visitor product is the Ecopark.
- Doing Itacaré as a rushed half day. It deserves a night, not two bus rides and a photograph.
Getting around Ilhéus: public transport and more
- Jorge Amado Airport sits between Pontal and the southern beaches, minutes from both, with connections via São Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Salvador.
- Ride share apps work in town for Centro, Pontal and the beach strip, and city buses run the coastal road cheaply in daylight.
- Rent a car or hire a driver for the Chocolate Road farms, Cururupe, Lagoa Encantada, Una and Comandatuba.
- Itacaré is about 72 km and ninety minutes north on the paved BA-001, with intercity buses several times a day.
