Things to do in Ijen
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Ijen
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Core dry season: firmest trails, clearest blue fire nights and the best sunrise odds at the rim.
Shoulder months: mostly dry conditions with more weather risk, and fire and management closures possible.
Wet season: muddy steep trails, clouded sunrises and higher odds of weather and gas closures; keep a spare day.
Best things to do in Ijen
Jagir Waterfall
A small accessible waterfall on the Kalibendo plantation road, the easy soft landing after an Ijen night.
Kalibendo Eco Tourism
Coffee, rubber and spice plantings on a shaded mountain road, with waterfalls along the Licin plantation belt.
Jampit Coffee Plantation
A large Arabica estate at about 900 metres for cultivation and processing, on the Bondowoso approach.
Where to stay in Ijen
Licin and Tamansari
Ijen base, shortest night drive
Plantation resorts and hotels on the Paltuding road, beside Gandrung Terakota, cooler and quieter than the city.
Sempol and Blawan, Bondowoso side
west approach and Bromo crossings
Simple coffee plantation homestays about 45 minutes to 1 hour from Paltuding, with Blawan falls and hot springs by day.
Bondowoso town
crossing night before or after the climb
The largest town hotels on the west side, comfortable, but close to two hours to Paltuding at night.
Think twice about
- Bondowoso town as a crater eve base
The town is fine, but at close to two hours each way to Paltuding at night a 02:00 gate leaves almost no sleep. Base in Sempol or Licin for the climb night.
- Kawah Ijen crater lake shore
Never enter, touch or approach the acid lake at shore level for photographs. The water burns, gas collects above it, and the shore is a mining work area.
- Paltuding trailhead as a place to sleep
There is no real accommodation at the gate, only parking, toilets and stalls. Nearby homestays are sometimes sold under a trailhead description.
Best restaurants in Ijen
Glenmore Restaurant
The Ijen Resort dining room for a sit down dinner before the climb and a real breakfast after it.
Belanga Restaurant
The Grand Harvest dining room in gardens on the Ijen road, the reliable dinner for its own guests.
Warung Paltuding
Trailhead stalls for hot coffee, noodles and snacks timed to the hiking gate, fuel, not dining.
Outdoor things to do in Ijen
Kawah Ijen
A night climb from Paltuding to blue fire, a turquoise acid lake and sunrise, hard, gassy and crowded at dawn.
Kawah Wurung
A green savanna hill 30 to 45 minutes from Paltuding, the gentle half day on the Bondowoso side.
Blawan Waterfall
A broad fall on the acidic Kali Pahit river that drains the crater lake, a look, not a swim spot.
Blawan Natural Hot Springs
Simple geothermal pools at different temperatures, the post climb soak on the Bondowoso side.

- Keep a spare day in East Java; Ijen closed for a forest fire from 4 to 28 September 2026 and can close again.
Is Ijen safe?
- Wear a fitted respirator gas mask, test the seal, and stop and close your eyes if gas blows across the trail.
- Never enter or touch the acid crater lake, at around pH 0.5, and keep descent time in the gas short.
- Check MAGMA Indonesia the day before climbing for the current alert level.
Ijen travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Tours quoted without entry, mask, health certificate or guide included; ask what is included in writing.
- Old photos of a huge blue fire wall sold as current; the 2026 guidance says the flame most visitors see is smaller.
- The crater descent sold as guaranteed; it is conditional on gas, wind and park direction on the night.
Getting around Ijen: public transport and more
- Every route ends at Paltuding: about 1 hour from Banyuwangi city, 45 minutes to 1 hour from Sempol, close to 2 hours from Bondowoso town, all at night.
- Hire transport with the climb and agree pickup, waiting and return times in writing; do not self drive the Ijen road at night.
- Sleep in the afternoon before the climb, not in the car; there is no useful public transport to Paltuding at hiking hours.
