Things to do in Huntsville
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Huntsville
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Best months overall, with mild hiking, Panoply and baseball opening in spring and mountain colour in autumn.
Hot and humid summer, with Space Camp in session, the Orion season at its peak and daily afternoon thunderstorms.
Lights season from mid November, with Galaxy of Lights, the Tinsel Trail and candlelight events, and genuinely cold nights.
Cheap and quiet winter, with uncrowded museums and low hotel rates but bare trails and no baseball.
Worst months for weather. Choose them only for a camp session, an Orion bill or a fare.

- North Alabama is tornado country in spring. Know your hotel shelter plan during a watch.
- Summer thunderstorms close trails, paddle days and amphitheatre shows quickly.
Huntsville travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Doing the Rocket Center in 90 minutes turns a world class museum into a gift shop memory.
- Lowe Mill on a closed studio weekday morning is a thinner visit. Aim for Saturday.
- Bridge Street alone is not Huntsville. Add downtown, Twickenham, Lowe Mill and the mountain.
- The Ledges is private. Spectate at the Huntsville Championship and play Hampton Cove instead.
- Summer midday hiking is miserable in Alabama humidity. Hike before 10am.
Getting around Huntsville: public transport and more
- You need a car. The sights are spread across a wide metro joined by I-565 and Memorial Parkway.
- Downtown is the one walkable cluster. Stay there and you can walk your evenings.
- Downtown to the Rocket Center is about 15 minutes, to Hampton Cove about 20, to Decatur about 25 to 30.
- Avoid Memorial Parkway at 5 to 6pm, the traffic every local warns about.
