Is Hervey Bay safe?
- Extreme UV most of the year. Hat, sunscreen and shade discipline, including on whale boats.
- Stingers are a low risk here, mainly November to May. A rash vest is sensible.
- On K'gari never feed dingoes, keep children close and do not swim on the unpatrolled eastern beach. Emergency 000.
Hervey Bay travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Arriving November to June expecting whales. There are none outside the season.
- Self driving K'gari without sand experience, permits and tide planning. First timers get bogged.
- Assuming the best view means the best kitchen. The best dinner is a small bistro, the best fish and chips a takeaway.
Getting around Hervey Bay: public transport and more
- Hire a car or a bike. The town is a ten kilometre strip and buses are infrequent.
- Most tours include accommodation pickups or marina transfers. Confirm when booking.
- River Heads for the K'gari ferry is twenty minutes south. Use a tour transfer or your own car.
