Things to do in Bendigo
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Bendigo
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Autumn is the best season: mild days, golden park leaves, harvest and the Easter Festival.
Spring is second best: wildflowers, tulips in September and October, and Blues and Roots in November.
Winter is cold with frosty mornings, lit by Electric Wonderland, the Writers Festival and hearty dinners.
Summer is the hardest season: regular mid 30s heat and spikes above 40, so sightsee early and use the mine at midday.

Think twice about
- Calder Highway and McIvor Highway motel strips at Kangaroo Flat
Highway facing and noisy, with nothing to walk to after dark. Every dinner and attraction becomes a drive. Only choose for price with a car.
- Kangaroo Flat and Long Gully residential streets as a short stay base
Ordinary, safe suburbs but a poor visitor base: no dining precinct, no tram at the door and dark quiet streets at night.
- Hargreaves Mall immediate blocks as a base
Fine by day but the shopping blocks empty completely after shops shut. Base two blocks west on View Street where restaurants keep streets alive.

- The centre outside the restaurant streets is quiet after about 9pm on weekdays, quiet rather than threatening.
- Summer heat and sun are the main risks on trails: start early, carry water and check fire danger ratings.
- Bring a layer for the mine: it stays at about 14 degrees underground all year.
Bendigo travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- Do not come expecting Bendigo Art Gallery to be open: it is closed from December 2025 until early 2028.
- Do not take a Melbourne bus tour that gives you under an hour in Bendigo: the city needs a night and the train is easy.
- Highway motel strips sell convenience they do not deliver for visitors without a car.
- Older lists leading with Masons of Bendigo are out of date: it has closed for good.
Getting around Bendigo: public transport and more

- V/Line trains run roughly hourly from Melbourne Southern Cross in about two hours.
