Things to do in Canberra
And where to stay, the best time to visit, what a day costs, and the traps to skip.
Best time to visit Canberra
• a note or something on ✦ an occasion worth the trip
Autumn, best all-round window; March is the single best month, highs easing from 25C to 15C.
Spring, second-best window, Floriade, blossom and highs 17 to 22C, with serious pollen.
Summer, long evenings and thinner buzz, highs 28 to 30C, Parliament mostly out and some restaurants on break.
Winter, cold, clear and cheapest, highs 12 to 13C and lows routinely below zero; worst for a walking first visit.

Where to stay in Canberra
Braddon / Civic (City Centre)
first trip, all-round base
Walk to dinner on Lonsdale Street, light rail and Civic shops nearby, buses south to the institutions.
Kingston / Kingston Foreshore + Manuka
relaxed, local stay
Lakefront apartments and cafes south of the lake, quieter at night and prettier in the morning.
New Acton / City West
design and culture
A small curated precinct by the lake, walk to Civic in 10 minutes and cycle the lake from the door.
Barton / Realm Precinct
business and institutions
Walking distance to Parliament and the Parkes galleries, dead quiet on non-sitting weekends.
Parliament / Yarralumla
destination stay
Choose it for the Hyatt itself and its gardens; you will drive or ride-share to most dinners.
Think twice about
- Civic late at night, Garema Place and bus interchange fringe
The one area flagged for drinking, abuse and incidents after venues close. Keep to lit main streets and ride-share if drinking.
- Outer town centres and highway motel strips
Belconnen, Woden, Tuggeranong, Gungahlin and highway strips are not unsafe but are 20 to 40 minutes from everything and need a car for every meal.
- Fyshwick as a base
A daytime industrial and retail precinct worth visiting for coffee and markets, not a place to sleep.
- Isolated lakeside and reserve car parks after dark
Empty, unlit and far from help. Enjoy lake paths by day and at sunset, not as a midnight activity.

- Safe by Australian standards; take normal CBD care in Civic late at night and use lit lake paths only after dark.
- Slow down for kangaroos on dawn and dusk roads; a roo strike is the commonest serious visitor accident.
- Respect bushfire and closure alerts, check Parks ACT on the day, and swim only in designated areas. Emergency number 000.
Canberra travel tips: tourist traps to skip
- The Sydney coach whistle-stop is the canonical bad Canberra trip; for one day do War Memorial, lake loop and Braddon dinner.
- Cockington Green and National Dinosaur Museum are family picks, oversold as adult headlines.
- Telstra Tower is closed for refurbishment until at least late 2027; use Mount Ainslie and Dairy Farmers Hill for the view.
- Do not assume Parliament is sitting; check the calendar for Question Time and hotel prices.
Getting around Canberra: public transport and more
- Rent a car for Tidbinbilla, Namadgi and wine days; a centre-only weekend works with buses, e-scooters and ride-share.
- Light rail runs only along Northbourne Avenue and does not cross the lake; Kingston and Barton need bus, bike or ride-share.
- Cycling is real transport: flat separated lake paths link the precincts.
- Airport is 15 minutes to Civic with no train; Sydney is about 3 hours by road.
